For $10, the crystal expansion is worth it for the plastic trays alone imo.
Sounds great, but an Amazon reviewer mentioned that the trays are ironically incompatible with the base game, specifically that the colored cubes do not fit.

I have the base game and the only problem I've noticed is the score counter section is in groups of two so it's easy to slide the piece from one to two, three to four, ect
We've had no issues with the pieces fitting and have started to always use them. We haven't played with the new boards.
I'd recommend the expansion as well.
Edit: is the chocolate version the same as the base just a different color palette?
