NOTE: I am a 9yr Synology and Xpenology user, but I moved to QNAP in 2017. They are pretty much the same, but QNAP offers more powerful/modular/upgradeable hardware at a more affordable price.
NOTE2: I hear Qnap users being a victim of ransomware, but I never had it (I have 2 Qnap that backs up each other). I hope this is not a marketing gimmick of the other. The competition and followers of each NAS (Synology/QNAP) are fierce and too loyal. It's like hearing fanboys of Intel/AMD, Android/iOS, Windows/MacOS, ... For me , both NAS are pretty much the same,,, I've used both and I like both, but I just needed a powerful affordable hardware that Qnap happens to offer.

For $100, probably worth it to go with the 464. $200? Again, depends on use case but this could be the best QNAP deal we see. Considering it myself.
If you go to the 464, the 4GB model has upgradable memory. The 8GB does not.

I guess like you I'm wondering if this TS-462 is the best we will see. NASCompares did forecast that TS-464 deals might be likely.

I thought the TS-464-4GB version went out of stock due to RAM availability & QNAP switched focus to fixed/soldered 8GB. However, I've seen comments (Youtube/Reddit) with some recent purchases arriving unsoldered & again allowing RAM upgrades even on the 8GB version.
Regarding the RAM, I believe you are correct that the soldered RAM was the result of RAM shortages. Now that those have eased, the RAM should be upgradable one the "current" models. This is the case for everything I have seen and read over at least the past several months.

I'd like to use one for Plex playback (including remote playback, have a lifetime pass), as well as for backing up photos off my family's phones, Time Machine backups for a couple of Macs, and just general "storage" (e.g., music and documents).
Right now I'm running a WD 18TB external drive connected via USB to a Mac Mini with Plex installed on it. I also have an extra external drive and am planning on shucking both to put them in the NAS if I end up getting one.
Would I be better off with this QNAP NAS, or the Synology DS224+ that's gonna go on sale for $255? The Synology is quite cheaper and this QNAP seems like it's much more future-proof and has a few more features, I'm just wondering if my use case warrants the $200 difference in price.
Quick edit to also ask about comparing this to the Synology DS923+ which will be going on sale for $480, but my understanding is that the Plex app on Synology needs an Intel CPU for transcoding so it might be a no-go if I want 4K remote play, correct?

This is also an NVR. They call it QVR. I run 6 IP cams and the Qnap is far efficient than Blue IRIS.
There are tons that you can do. It has evolved and this is more than just a NAS.

The 464 is the better buy for an extra $100. $200 though...depends on use case.
