Power efficiency. The QNAP will be more efficient especially if you run it 24/7/365
Portability
Ease of use. Easy to put drives in and out. Easy RAID rebuild.
Install QNAP apps. [qnap.com] If you don't need Plex, you don't have to install it etc.
Available Mobile Apps (Android/iOS). Example, you can check your cameras on your phone, save pictures directly to your NAS, etc. QNAP has different apps for different applications.
Has more features
QNAP Support
QNAP security updates

NOTE: I am a 9yr Synology and Xpenology user, but I moved to QNAP in 2017. They are pretty much the same, but QNAP offers more powerful/modular/upgradeable hardware at a more affordable price.
NOTE2: I hear Qnap users being a victim of ransomware, but I never had it (I have 2 Qnap that backs up each other). I hope this is not a marketing gimmick of the other. The competition and followers of each NAS (Synology/QNAP) are fierce and too loyal. It's like hearing fanboys of Intel/AMD, Android/iOS, Windows/MacOS, ... For me , both NAS are pretty much the same,,, I've used both and I like both, but I just needed a powerful affordable hardware that Qnap happens to offer.

Can anyone give a comparison/recommendation vs. stepping up to the TS-464?

What is your use case?

For $100, probably worth it to go with the 464. $200? Again, depends on use case but this could be the best QNAP deal we see. Considering it myself.

If you go to the 464, the 4GB model has upgradable memory. The 8GB does not.

No dedicated use case (ex. Plex) but rather general all-around (backups, media, Docker, VMs). Currently have TS-453Be & looking to update before that goes unsupported. From reviews, TS-464 looks like the successor, so was hoping to see a deal for it.

I guess like you I'm wondering if this TS-462 is the best we will see. NASCompares did forecast that TS-464 deals might be likely.

I thought the TS-464-4GB version went out of stock due to RAM availability & QNAP switched focus to fixed/soldered 8GB. However, I've seen comments (Youtube/Reddit) with some recent purchases arriving unsoldered & again allowing RAM upgrades even on the 8GB version.

I am thinking this one over. I am looking to upgrade from my 2 bay NAS for some room to grow. I would like to have a duel Raid 1 setup to use for storing media and such content. Not using plex so it does not need to transcode or do anything too heavy.

The 464 will be more up your alley then, much like me. It's far from a NEED so I'm not likely to spring unless I get a deal similar to to that of the DS923 that is/was running around late last week.

Regarding the RAM, I believe you are correct that the soldered RAM was the result of RAM shortages. Now that those have eased, the RAM should be upgradable one the "current" models. This is the case for everything I have seen and read over at least the past several months.

I have a TS-453Be maxed out with 4x16 TB in RAID5 (so about 48TB of storage). I mostly use it for HD and UHD MKV/MP4 playback via Plex on our home network. It works for what I need it to and I'm not in need of any more space anytime soon, so probably no need to upgrade?

My TS-251 from 2015 just died. Wondering if I should get this. Looks like I could just pop in my drives and it'll migrate into this new nas?

I owned both the 462 and returned for the 464. Neither or them have upgradeable ram, unless something changed in the last 6 months? 464 has better processor and 2x2.5gb ethernet (can shotgun then). Great for a plex server or google drive backup. 4 bays, and 2x m2 slots. It is a pain to get nvme drives in, and it's loud with mechanical drives.

I'm a complete newbie to NAS, so any help is appreciated.

I'd like to use one for Plex playback (including remote playback, have a lifetime pass), as well as for backing up photos off my family's phones, Time Machine backups for a couple of Macs, and just general "storage" (e.g., music and documents).

Right now I'm running a WD 18TB external drive connected via USB to a Mac Mini with Plex installed on it. I also have an extra external drive and am planning on shucking both to put them in the NAS if I end up getting one.

Would I be better off with this QNAP NAS, or the Synology DS224+ that's gonna go on sale for $255? The Synology is quite cheaper and this QNAP seems like it's much more future-proof and has a few more features, I'm just wondering if my use case warrants the $200 difference in price.

Quick edit to also ask about comparing this to the Synology DS923+ which will be going on sale for $480, but my understanding is that the Plex app on Synology needs an Intel CPU for transcoding so it might be a no-go if I want 4K remote play, correct?

Get a NAS with x86 CPU so you can run VM. Think about you able to run a Windows inside your NAS. Other Qnap even let you upgrade your CPU, add a video card etc. You can use the video card crunch PLEX or use it for your VM to play games.

This is also an NVR. They call it QVR. I run 6 IP cams and the Qnap is far efficient than Blue IRIS.

There are tons that you can do. It has evolved and this is more than just a NAS.

Is the ram upgradeable in this? I've got a dead TS 451 so I'm hoping this would be easier to set up and use for someone who wants to add storage for plex serving (primarily) and for time machine/windows backups.

I don't really follow– why would I want/need to run a Windows VM, or upgrade the NAS's CPU/GPU? I have a Windows PC I built for gaming some time ago but these days I don't really have much time for it, unfortunately. I also have Ring cameras so no need to hook up security cameras or record footage to the NAS.

The RAM is upgradable on the 464 now. Heard conflicting info on the 462. The 2 GB version is upgradable for sure.

The 464 is the better buy for an extra $100. $200 though...depends on use case.

Heard conflicting info on upgradability for the 462. The 2GB version definitely is.
