I think they're referring to price-per-TB, so 18 TB for $200 ($11.11/TB) is fairly close to 14TB for $150 ($10.71/TB).

Excellent price per TB, but for almost the same price you can get the WD 18TB from Best Buy which people say is more reliable (in my experience all the major brands are all the same)

Depends on scale of your setup.

For example I have 20 drives, having them in external housings with 20 power bricks wouldn't ideal.

Instead I have a server running in basement.

Also if you shuck them and put it in proper setup you also have proper cooling.

Drives in these external enclosures often run hot.

Its nice to finally see hard drives at decent sale prices again. On the flipside, I still can't believe a 14TB goes for this price when we were buying 14TB-16TB years ago in the same range.

Back blaze results suggest wd is slightly more reliable. I went with the WD from bb. I'd these were known to be Exos it would change things but that's a risk.

I picked up their 8 tb Seagate that was marked down to 100 a couple weeks ago. Contemplating getting this instead...

Just saw the BB isn't available on their website anymore by ebay Best Buy store still has the 18tb still available for $199. Not sure what to do...https://www.ebay.com/itm/196084472432

The only problem i have is the 18tb is WD. you have to use tape or something to use as internal drive after shuck while Seagate doesn't have this problem

Just want to add that in a raid array, buying one drive that's larger will not allow you to use the additional space. If you have 3x 12tb and 1x 18tb, the array treats them all as 12tb.

Agree, I do not want to mess with that, but I purchased two a few years ago and didn't have to do that for my Synology NAS.

I bought costco also and will be careful shucking the WD in case they have to go back.

Anyone know for sure if there is work to do on the pins on these WD ones?

To add to this, something like Synology SHR or Unraid will allow you to leverage additional space as long as you have at least two drives that are the same. Traditional RAID obviously needs them all to be the same.
