this is not what you want for a carry-on. the dimensions are taller/skinnier that what would be allowed for overhead bins. the vented back is nice for hiking, but adds to bulk that you can't just cinch away. carry-on size is also generally accepted to be 40-45 liters as well, so just from a volume standpoint even the 50L is probably too big. want shorter/wider pack for carry-on.

Osprey have the best guarantee. They are all I will buy for backpacking. I dropped one off a 100+ ft cliff on a trip and it got really beat up as you can imagine. I sent it in and they replaced it with a new pack. They are great to work with.
Exceptions would be winter camping with extra gear, possibly extended backcountry trips where you need to haul weeks of food, stuff like that.
I backpacked a lot growing up (I'm an eagle scout). After the first few miles up a hill, you understand that backpacking as a hobby is one of those 'less is more' situations. Nobody with experience brings enough stuff to fill a 65 liter pack.
That said, Osprey is a fantastic company and they have quality designs.
Backpacking packs are designed so that the majority of the weight rests on your hips. If your shoulders hurt that badly you probably need to make adjustments. Yosemite is one of my favorite parks! Hiking to Nevada Falls is a top 5 all time for me.
