Also highly recommend the expansion packs. If you only get one, get the Oceania expansion, which improves game play significantly. It's been on slick deals for $20 in the past.

Wingspan swift-start promo pack
This is a small promo pack for Wingspan and cannot be played without the base game.
Use these 10 new bird cards and 4 guides to help new players learn Wingspan. The guides walk players through the first 4 turns of the first round. The bird cards can be shuffled into the deck for use in non-learning games of Wingspan.
This pack is included in the current version of Wingspan (STM910, see note on the back of the box) but not the original version available from January-August 2019 (STM900).
Skip the instructions and watch a how it's played video on YouTube with first time players to get things started quickly: https://youtu.be/lgDgcLI2B0U
The base game on its own is great. The swift start pack is very helpful in making the first play of the game go a little smoother. But if the game draws you in, there are 3 expansions to add even more birds, plus 3 more releasing eventually (one expansion for each continent minus North America which is where the birds in the base game are from). As was already mentioned Oceania is great because it makes a few minor changes to the game that already make a great game even better. Asia is also really good, especially if you play mostly at 2 players. Europe is good too, but is mostly just more birds with some small twists on bird abilities. Also, there are some really cool component upgrades on Etsy/Meeplesource to really bling out the game. For most people, everything in the base game is more than enough but there is plenty more for people who really get into it.

The 'soundtrack' released by the makers is actually really well made and quite soothing:
