Yes this happens when the online or in store rep does not scan the serial # at the bottom of of the box. They need to scan twice, both the UPC and the serial #.

You can always return to Walmart if that happens as long you have a proof of purchase. Typically return, scan correctly and rebuy on the spot. This is not a Walmart or a tracfone only issue though.

Someone told me you can use the included Straight Talk sim card to activate with the TF customer rep. Not sure about that though. You may have to buy a TF sim card for a dollar.

Hmmm decisions, MetroPCS has the A54 for $49.95 + $40 plan but needs to wait 180 days. It would save me $50 since I don't really need a phone soon.

heads up if wanting to use this Metro A54 on Cricket after it unlocks. I waited the 6 months, phone unlocked, tried to use my Cricket sim, but it quickly rejects it. Their IMEI confirms it wont work on Cricket. I checked the PureTalk I<EI checker and it passes. Cricket has this A54 at $49.99 with port in and required plan, the additional 5 months of service so not such a good deal. I also got a Metro branded Pxel 6a and it passes the Cricket IMEI checker. I suggest to buy just the phone and then call Tracfone to get it on their cheapest plan ($10.) and wait the 60 days for unlock. You use the same sim, but don't turn on the phone if it's already installed.

Straight talk, Tracfone, Total wireless, Simple mobile and a few other brands are all owned by Verizon now. While the plans offered by each brand might be different, they all run on Verizon's network.

There was also a recent news about possible changes coming to these prepaid brands after November 2024. Not much details known.
