No plan required. You can activate with a tracfone $15 plan so that it can be unlocked for free after 60 days. No need to renew after the first month. May need to call them to rebrand the phone to tracfone if you want to activate on tracfone. If you already have a tracfone, ST, total service you can activate with that service for free.
Free shipping or free store pickup.
Also available directly from ST website. Skip adding a plan if you don't want one. Thanks to mitchflorida.

Obviously, no additional airtime/minutes/text/data will be added to your Tracfone account.
At this point I am still waiting for my order to ship from Straighttalk.com.
Maybe it will be cancelled.
When did you order your phones?
When did you get them (on or before Saturday?)?
What did the Tracfone CS people say to you about the error you got?
Did they find it suspicious that you ordered a Straight Talk phone and are now activating it at Tracfone?
They didn't have a problem re-branding your phones from ST to TF?
Despite what Mitchflorida has said, the included ST SIM is apparently not exactly the same as a TF SIM, hence the error you got.
Just activate as a locked TF (do not select bringing my own device) & choose keep current number.
ST sim is same as TF sim, even shows small TF right on it. Did not need to rebrand since it activated as a TF automatically.

Activate as a locked TF, choose keep current number & balance/number moves to new phone. Uses current service to qualify for unlocking.
EDIT: CHAT customer service saved the day.
If you are the rare bird looking for a phone to make into an Android gaming phone + run all the emulators this might not fully cut it
The CPU/GPU is roughly in-between the older Snapdragon 845 & a 855.
To fully game well and emulate everything you want 865 and up performance.
I'm keeping my gaming off my regular phone and keeping the gaming phone in a Kishi so it is essentially powerful retro console and decent android gamer. And also some security risk exists with downloading emulation stuff.
