You can also sync them with a computer/monitor using the free Hue Sync app. No HDMI box necessary in that scenario. I grabbed these for my daughter's PC to sync with movies and games.

What do people use these as primarily? Just mood lighting type of thing?

If you're willing to pay for the HDMI box, it does a great job of lighting the wall behind your TV in colors that change to reflect the colors on the screen. I didn't think I'd like the effect, but it is pretty awesome.

Gotcha, yea I've always loved that look. I have white LED bias lighting on my tv but the color lights is such a show.

And this works very well btw. If I want light sync on my older Samsung Frame with movies, I usually just mirror the TV with my PC and sync the lights that way.

I hear that certain newer tvs (like Samsung oled) have built in support for these without the play box? Is that true?

Perhaps to many this is not an issue, the only reason I never got the box - when it came out it was HDMI In/Out 1.4 and it did not have Dolby Vision passthrough, the investment on the home theater was too much for this device not to support it.

Is it different now? Upgraded? Is there a workaround?

These occasionally go on sale for 40 each, either 2 set or 3 set. 33 is the cheapest I've seen them, much less frequently, and usually from Costco.

It says the bridge is required. It's not included, correct?

The bridge is a pita for some set ups to get working properly. If you can't get it to work, buy a hdmi signal splitter and it will make life easier.

I also thought it was dumb but had to use my Amex play dell credit for something and it turns out to be pretty cool

Yes, but the app you will need to purchase costs $130. I opted for the $140 refurbished deal on the HDMI sync box at BestBuy instead.
