Not sure if it is the same as a few years ago, but if your fridge does not come with it, you can call GE and request a filter bypass (usually for whole house water systems).

Previously, the filter bypass had the RFID underneath the sticker in the bypass. You could heat the sticker with a hairdryer and very carefully peal the sticker and RFID off. Use care and take your time, they may be using stronger glue now as well. Once you have the sticker off, you want to look at the orientation of your existing filter and RFID in the filter housing in your fridge. Take the sticker and RFID from the bypass and stick it into the filter housing where the water filter's RFID lined up with the filter in the installed position. Don't seal it all the way down, so you can test with a non-RFID filter. If all is good, remove the non-RFID filter, press the sticker down, and reinstall the non-RFID filter, and flush as needed.

This will allow you to use non RFID filters as the fridge will see the bypass. Note that the fridge controls will show a bypass installed, or on the simpler display models, it will not show the % life left for the filter. Good luck, take your time, and if you tear your RFID on your first bypass you can always buy another filter bypass on eBay and try again, the savings will make it worth it.

Same here. My GE fridge died within 6 months, no longer cooling. Called warranty, but a tech can't come out for 7 days. All food gone bad. He said it was the compressor, so another 5 days to deliver the part. It gets replaced, but now the fridge is loud as hellll. Tech said all GE fridges start with a small compressor, but that model fails a lot. If it fails they replace it with a stronger but louder compressor. No other choice. Basically every 1-2 hours when the compressor needs to run, it'll be as loud as a stick vacuum for 15 mins at a time.

GE used to be a great brand until Chinese bought them out. The only all made in USA is Whirlpool, and I still don't have issues with my Whirlpool appliances today.

I was so happy to get rid of my side-by-side, I hated it, sold it for $500 and it was like new, got the four-door French door and it's been awesome, if you can find a good deal on one of those I highly recommend them

Lowes hires mickey mouse delivery companies with rude employees. Two strikes. Not waiting for a third.
I ordered a Dishwasher and Fridge from Lowes.. unlike Costco, I had to buy the water line for the Fridge separately. They decided to Deliver the Fridge from store A, and Dishwasher with water line from Store B. When Fridge show up first, they can't hook up water line. Then Delivery for store B by doesn't show up by 2 pm window, drivers can't be found by Lowes. Finally got a call from driver by 8 pm that they are on the way. I told the driver I'm not home, and he just said OK and hangs up. I call him to back a few times and never answered or responded to voicemail. After calling the useless Lowes line with no answer for a few days, Manager from Store B calls me a week later to tell me driver returned the Dishwasher and to reschedule.

Not the end of it yet.

Manager schedules a week later for Delivery, and the night before I get an email saying it will be delivered to my Old house. I guess The manager just picked up one of the Address I had on file without asking or looking where it was supposed to be shipped. After getting nowhere with the store again, I decided just to receive it at my old address and drove it to the new house and installed it myself.

Very disheartening I was just starting to shop for all new appliances ( I did the whole kitchen over in 2002 by myself ) , Samsung and Lg were off my list , I was going to stick w GE . My old 25 cu ft Hotpoint side by side ( made by GE ) from 1993 ( yes still going ) is having a problem w the through the door ice and water dispensers failing . Kenmore fridges used all GE compressors back in the day that is what made them so great ! I also have a Kenmore Elite series gas range w warmer spot in the middle of the glass cooktop and warmer drawer on bottom . My wife wants both of those features on the new range but so far only maytag makes a range w a warmer drawer but no warmer spot on top .Also have a GE profile series microwave w 4 speed exhaust fan that is awesome but alas tired ( top end loaded w grease even w cleaning both filters now blower squeals but otherwise is an amazing microwave . Iam going to be hard pressed finding one w a 3 speed exhaust w a boost mode that really moves so heat / and smoke out !! Wtf is w these companies anymore no pride in workmanship I thought this fridge would be a great start ???

We just installed the bypass with an external inline filter. Much cheaper and last way longer than the factory ones.

I've only had to replace 1 GE microwave. My other GE appliances are over 15 years old.

Beware: Lowes and Home Depot only have a 48 hour return policy on major appliances. If something goes wrong in three days you are stuck trying to get it repaired.

You have a video link to show how you do this? Are you putting the external filter on the water line from your wall? Or are you cutting the fridge water line?

I have 18 years old GE profile refrigerator and dish washer. No major issues so far. Parts are cheap, easily available and tons of videos to replace by DIYers.

There are several Lowes and Home Depot stores near me and the 48 hour return policy is the #1 reason I refuse to purchase major appliances from either of those stores.

Sure miss the good-old days when Sears was in business.
