As for amp, do you have one you like or recommend to drive the HD600s?
Used solid state amp very good for ALL headphones, look for Questyle CMA Twelve for $700 -$800. Note that it has a built in DAC and no input which can save money but can be a bottleneck down the line if you intend on getting high end DAC later.
New solid state amp budget amp pretty great for ALL headphones, Schiit Jotunheim 2 for $400.
If one wants new tubes, the transformer coupled Quicksilver Headphone Amp is going to drive almost all headphones to amazing performance but it will run $1,200.
If one is on a low budget and does not intend to acquire future headphones nor other headphone amplifiers, sticking with just one amplifier for the remainder of their lives, the Little Dot III can often be found under $300.
If one is not too into audio fidelity, one can still achieve great performance out of HD600 with one of the popular $100 headphone amplifiers and enjoy great sound. edit: JDS Labs makes a $99 Atom Plus amp that would suffice for many. https://jdslabs.com/product/atom-amp/

The Sennheiser HD599 are good but the Sennheiser HD600 is the better deal performance/$ over ANY Sennheiser headphone and most other dynamic driver headphones from other manufactures. HD600 is a high end heapdhone sold at a budget headphone price.

Ultimately, if you are already happy with what you may want save your hard earned cash. HD-599 has decent tonality and it plays louder at the same volume knob setting. In other words, I had to turn down the volume knob each time switching to the HD-599 since it is easier to drive. But it is a no brainier for those that do have the extra cash to get the HD-600 and experience better sound. Especially if one intends on eventually getting into tube amplifiers.

I prefer open back for private listening, closed or earbuds for listening in public or at library.

Thank you for this detailed response. I think for the person I'm talking about currently, they're not quite ready to step it up to the pro leagues with headphone amps more than the $100 range.
I appreciate that you provided a link do the JDS Lab's Atom Plus, I think its a fantastic little machine.
How would you compare it to something like this? https://www.amazon.com/Fosi-Audio...f9840&t
I'm not entirely sure how to compare different audiophile products when I don't have both to A/B at home...
