Between this and 70-200mm, which one is a better deal and more useful if one can only spend on one lens?

24-70 is "normal" range, 70-200 is telephoto (zoomed in). Neither range is inherently better, it depends what you're trying to photograph and how far away it is. 70-200 will be useless for tight spaces, 24-70 won't be great for shooting sports from the sidelines.

I won both (the EF versions). The 24-70 2.8 almost never leaves my camera. I use the 70-200 2.8 maybe twice a year? Or not even.

This or compromise in between is RF 28-105 f2.8

This is a very good normal zoom that almost stays on my R. You can do almost all of your photography with this one lens. Wide open, at F 2.8, photos are razor sharp. And, this is an exceptional deal.

I bought the 24-70 refurbished from Canon some time ago and except for the packaging I couldn't tell that it was not brand new - great lens!

I don't think Canon makes an RF 28-105 f/2.8 lens, do they? The announced a 24mm-105mm f/2.8, but that is $3,000, and only available for pre-order at this point.

Canon makes a great F/4.0 24mm-105mm L lens that would be an excellent compromise between the the 24-70 and 70-200, and the refurbished price yesterday was remarkably low at $700, but it looks like it's out of stock at the moment:

I bought RF 24-105mm f/4 lens to go with R8. Was tempted to get 24-70 f/2.8. But it is still too much even with big discount. I am just a casual user. Canon also offered $200 discount on 24-105mm f/4 lens with R5 purchase. That was amazing deal for professional users.

Update 12/27/23: this refurb lens is back in stock at Canon for $1299. I already bought this lens new for $1615 after upgrade discount. Perfect lens, zero dust in lens, zero scratches or blemishes. $445 difference to go refurb and risk any of the above as others complained on Reddit.

It's basically impossible to get the Canon Upgrade discount on this lens. It sells out too quickly before you can get a hold of Canon customer service to apply the %10 discount for you. Their call wait times are 10-15 minutes.
