What facts. Not once did you talk about performance. The m1 max chip is insanely powerful. That's like comparing rtx 3090 and 4090. Yes the 4090 is 2x better than 3090 but 99% of the population will never need the 3090s full capabilities. It's like buying a commercial air-conditioner when you live in a studio.

I didn't say a word about performance, other than this is two entire generations old.

And I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to be running an unpatched, unsupported OS...especially in this day and age. Given it's two years old, and Apple *loves* to render old systems unsupported...you'll get more mileage out of a newer system.

Whereas in Microsoft-land, Windows 10 will have been supported an entire decade when it reaches end-of-life in 2025. It's really hard to say that about any Apple product.
I think that Apple supports current version of Mac OS plus two previous versions. That would make Mac OS Monterey from 2021 the oldest version supported today. Monterey supports Macs from 2015. Eight years of support is not bad.

"Impartial"...that's a laugh riot! Your list of "impartial" facts, you neglected to mention the $2100 savings from the original price of this model. You also neglected to mention the $5199 price for the same config of the M3 Max 16" MBP.

To most people except those that need every bit of performance, the differences between the M1 Max and M3 Max model aren't worth $2400. But you do you.

Apple is notorious for ending support for older (fully usable) hardware. One can only assume it's to drive new sales.
I bought a Pro from one of the M1 deals, but have the same concern when it comes to support. Have an old generation Ipad (10 years now) that still is like new and charges to 100%, but due to lack of software support is pretty much a brick. Although it's another thing that other hardware on the market may not live that long, Apple is literally forcing us to get new hardware while the existing one still functions flawlessly. We all know that we pay premium price for apple products over windows ones, so I wish they reconsider software support for longer durations.

The only option I have for my Ipad is to give it away for recycling for which I will be paid 0 dollars. No trade in options to even upgrade.

Thank you for sharing. But if samsung can do that, I expect apple to do that as well, or at least extend OS support. I am one of those who try my best to not contribute to e-waste/ avoid e-waste processing when possible. I'm sure there are several others in the same boat, with perfectly functioning hardware on old gen Ipads and Ipods and don't want to switch to something else because they like apple more for the quality they offer. It's a sad story they have to send it in for recycling, if they want to continue with apple.

I personally don't think that's long enough. You would get only 6 years of updates to a machine that could easily do almost everything an updated os requires of it for 6 more years on top of that. You can't force an os update like you can on an Intel Mac with Opencore.

For a tip top spec MacBook this is near as good as it ganna get. Been waiting for a great 16" deal. Will have to look into that PWM flickering the earlier poster said though

FYI, this is a two year old machine that's two full generations behind the current. This is the first generation ("M1") of their "M" series processors, and Apple is now releasing their 3rd generation chips called the "M3".

Other than having extra M&Ms, there's a sizeable increase in performance in the new ones -- and Apple is notorious for ending support for older (fully usable) hardware. One can only assume it's to drive new sales.

Also, this model has the most expensive version of Applecare, a $400 two-year extension to your warranty.
No more lies have been spoken in one sentence ever.

I don't know about M3 chips but I went down a very deep rabbit hole back around March/April when I ordered a version of this with 32GB RAM/1TBSSD, and the general consensus was that the M1's were overall a better pick. The M2 even had one particular downside that I'm forgetting now, but I think it had something to do with write speeds. Also, since this is a MAX (not a regular Pro) chip, the M1 Max was actually superior in speed iirc to the M2 Pro. There's a popular YouTube reviewer whose name I'm forgetting and he did a video basically telling people to save money and pick up the M1's over M2's and said it was the first time he wasn't upgrading his own device in years.

Having said all that, I did purchase the 32GB/1TB SSD version of this and although it is FAST, and awesome, and the screen is beautiful... every day I use it, I kind of wish I'd gone with the 14" screen. It's big and bulky and heavy and not easy to carry around in terms of sheer form factor. I'm into lifting weights and I'm not a small guy by any means so when I say it's heavy, I don't mean it in a literal sense like I have trouble picking it up; it just comes down to basic portability and comfort and ease of use; unless I'm on the sofa with it on my lap, if I want to just use it on-the-go it tends to be kind of uncomfortable. It's harder to grab it with one hand and move it around. Because it's so large and bottom heavy I constantly worry about damaging it or banging it against something unintentionally. I would say if you mostly work at a desk and don't intend to use it like a laptop, then it is PERFECT. But if you want to carry it around your house, use it in bed, feel more "carefree" moving it around and using it -- then definitely consider the 14". I have a 13" Windows laptop for work, and it's definitely easier to move around and it's kind of amazing how much bulkier and less portable the Macbook feels by comparison.

But the screen is gorgeous, and every time I'm using it at my home office desk, I'm floored by the performance and the screen and speaker quality. It was my first Macbook, and overall I think I made a good choice, but I have considered reselling it and just getting a Pro model with a 14" screen.

Apple tends to support their devices for longer than most manufacturers. Microsoft is good too. Google on the other hand…

Thanks for the feedback. I was a little surprised to see it around the 4.8lbs but when you have 16" and a metal alloy shell, it's hard to make it ultra light, but the opinion is legit for people used to using 13" devices that could be closer to 3lbs or so.
