We play in person, but we're all still on virtual tabletops on our laptops 😂

I've used roll20. You can upload images of the maps so it can look like you are walking through dungeons with fog of war to hide parts the players haven't explored. I thought it was pretty cool. You can add ambient music as well.

Do you mean for maps, or for hosting the interaction? For maps you can both make and download maps from inkarnate which is an amazing resource. Also there are great subbreddits like r/battlemaps or r/dndmaps (and, of course, r/inkarnate)

For hosting for free there's roll20. If you are only using DnD, AboveVTT is pretty cool. If you are looking to buy something better, Foundry and Tabletop Simulator are both good choices.

I'm too old school for this, the only thing on a table for us was dice and character sheets and a bunch of books. Get off my lawn etc etc

Absolutely yes. If I still played in person, I'd LOVE this.

Is this only for in-person gaming? I don't play (obviously), but thinking for a gift for somebody who does.

Yes, very much so! The case/box itself alone is a very cool thing to have as a D&D player. The dungeon tiles and fold out map are also very nice. They're thick and sturdy and you can use dry eraser markers on them.
These campaign cases are a steal at $20 in my opinion.

Looks neat, but I think it's a wotc product, wouldn't waste my money on their low quality stuff

If this was 3rd party, I'd buy it

It is official wotc and I'd agree with you except for when these things go on sale for $20.

I have both campaign boxes, and both are well worth the $20 IMHO. The boxes are nice and sturdy and just very cool and the components in each box are more than nice enough for the money at these prices. The tiles and the fold out map are thick and of nice quality, and though I wish it came with more stickers (or that there were other separate packs of stickers to purchase)...they are decent decals and are made of thin plastic (not paper) so they should last.

I'd agree with you when these aren't on sale. There's no way in heck these things are worth the $65 retail (which is what my LGS sells them for)...but at $20 I feel like these things are a heck of a good deal for what you get.
