Bought a bunch of Acer's over the years for my clients. One by one they all died. Literally all the Dells I bought them are still working. This is like 10 years later. I'm done buying Acer. Their stuff doesn't last. It's nice for a year or two though.

Tricky question. The key contrast here is presumably between the i3-N305 (being an Efficiency-core only CPU) and those other 12th generation CPUs which incorporate Performance-cores or a mix of P-cores and E-cores. The 12th generation E-cores have come a long way from their Atom-based roots, providing single core performance comparable to 6th generation i-series CPUs. However, P-cores haven't stood still either relative to earlier i-series CPU cores. As a result, benchmarking has suggested that the 8-core N305 provides performance close to, but not necessarily exceeding that, of reference 4-core i-series CPUs from recent generations (the i5-1135G7 or, my personal favorite sleeper, the i3-1125G4 come to mind). At the same time, the efficiency of these newer E-cores is hard to beat. This suggests that the N305 is a solid productivity CPU in a way which wasn't necessarily true of older 2- and 4-core Atom-based designs. However, bargain shoppers might continue to make the case that 2P+4E designs represent better bang-for-buck or that older 4-core i-series CPUs are better long-term investments in some applications.

So if you're worried that the N305 will disappoint in the way that other Atom-based CPUs have as general purpose PCs you can breathe a sigh of relief. However, don't go trashing all your 4-core i-series PCs just yet...

Good luck!
Jon

Wonder how low the power draw can be on this thing. N100 mini PCs are wonderful for Plex and a small amount of virtualization. this thing would be a dream with 8 e cores.

For CPU comparison, I use https://www.cpubenchmark.net/ it gives a reasonable quick apples to apple performance comparison, but you need to keep your usage in mind when looking at numbers. Because gaming performance (not that this laptop is for gaming) and raw compute aren't the same.

The pictures in the listing do not show the hinge for a 2 in 1. Also the listing does not say "spin". The part number does reference the 2 in 1 spin model however. I took a gamble. If it isn't the model in the listing I will return. Take a screenshot if you do order just in case.

I think you're taking a pretty safe bet assuming they are using the correct model name. That ebay listing model name is A3SP14-31PT-32M6 which is the same as the Spin model. Acer documents an Acer Aspire 3 model (with touchscreen and N305 CPU) that isn't a Spin with model A314-36P-35UU. The Spin model name appears to be in a format A3SP14 for Aspire 3 SPin 14.

Good luck!

With touchscreen and decent productivity CPU this might finally have been the bargain choice I've been waiting to recommend this season... but the 8GB of soldered RAM makes this a good choice for today but potentially limited as to how long it will serve its purpose in the future. Even for those buyers for whom a Windows PC with 8GB of RAM is a fine choice today (which includes the basic Word/Excel/e-mail crowd), the long-term usability of this system is genuinely threatened by some future update that finally pushes 8GB systems to be stuck in swap file purgatory in the way that 4GB systems have become already.

Good luck!
Jon

These are not comparable machines. The one you linked to is a much bigger and heavier machine.

Woha… Thanks for the detailed explanation. I am not a computer person but this will definitely help in making some decisions.
