I don't have the encyclopedic knowledge of the Vitamix line as some do, but this model seemed like a low price way to get into the brand with a model with decent features (including compatibility with the "self-detect" accessories like the food processor base, etc). 5 year warranty [vitamix.com] with free warranty shipping takes the sting out of the "certified reconditioned" status in my book.

Certified Reconditioned Venturist V1200 in Black, Red or Slate w/ 5 year warranty (and extended warranty available).

Product Specifications
Series : Venturist
Compatibility : Ascent & Venturist Series
Dimensions : 10.5 x 8 x 17 in
Blades : Hardened Stainless Steel Blades
HP : 2.2-peak
Electrical Ratings : 120 V, 50-60 Hz, 12 Amps
Product Weight : 11.98 lbs
Cord : 4 ft
Use : Household
Manufacturer : Vitamix - Cleveland, Ohio USA

the low profile one still wont' fit under my moms cupboards, so I think I'm going to go for the 5200 with the tall container since none of them fit with the container on. Any reason I should seek out a different model? Not seeing any major perks elsewhere and the tall container seems to perform the best for most things

Lots of review sites seem to push the 5200 as their fav as well.
If you look in many chef kitchens, they get the 5200. It excels at sauces and delicate mixing, especially when you don't need 4 cups of something. That has everything to do with the container design and variable speed knob.

The other lines are geared more to consumers who might like to press a button and have a program run, do things like make snow cones, etc.

yeah I got a friend the v1200 with the wide one and I kinda want to get her the tall skinny container at some point. Its soo tall with it, but I'd rather store it without a container on it vs. using the wide one for certain things

I recommend the 48oz container, especially if you are not blending large batches. It is the same blade/bottom while being shorter and easier to access what you blend in. You likely will be able to store with it.
