NAS manufacturers have you locked behind not just model compatibility but FIRMWARE revision? That's batshit insane

My Plex server was getting full and I've been a little bummed at the weak drive deals, glad this one came along, thanks for posting!
Just purchased one and it will double my storage capacity.

I picked up the WD 18TB Element drive for ~$210 after cashback. Not knocking this deal, but that might be appealing so some folks.

How does this stack up to the $200 18tb wd essential from BB?
This has a 5 year warranty and no warranty risks from shucking

Nice. Grabbed a pair and will keep BB 18T pair as external backup.

These are definitely better quality drives than the shuckable 18tb ones. You get the full 5 year warranty and know exactly what drives these are. The white labels could be anything from factory seconds or drives that don't meet their retail model standards.

According to some forums/redits, it doesn't work with Synology, is that correct?

Depends on who you ask. Some say the noise is higher with Seagate. Also when they first came out, they had high fail rate so got a bed rep. From my research recently there's not much difference it seems outside of the higher noise. But I've also heard some say that it's not noticeable from the noise. I had WD Red Pro 8TB right now so I just need higher storage and I don't care for the noise as it's not in my bedroom or anything
Very happy with our Seagate Reds. Very unhappy with their enterprise SCSI drives.

Depends on your setup. I have Synology NAS and I use their SHR which you can mix sizes and it will auto fix it for you. If you run a traditional RAID set up they don't play well with different sizes
That's what I was afraid of. I didn't want to have 52TB in storage and be limited to around 20TB after all is said and done, so I went ahead and ordered another two and will plan on selling my two 10TB drives online. Thanks for the reply.

Yes solid plan I did the same because even the hybrid you lose some storage

The compatibility list is notoriously out of date. Seagate IronWolf Pro is a reliable and efficient hard drive for Synology NAS systems.
