I ordered 4 for my NAS the last time WD had a sale. One drive was DOA. It took me hours to prove it to WD that it was dead (you need to be able to plug it into a desktop computer, not a laptop, and run their software), and then it took WD weeks to replace it (with zero communication). They replaced it, a brand new DOA drive RMA'd within 2 days of receipt, with a refurbished unit and just said it was their policy. Buyer beware.

Had to shuck but 18TB for $200 from Best Buy just the other week.

I have them installed in my NAS now and did a full pre-clear, write, read test on them without any issues and all the other drives I have in my nas were also WD externals.

My older NAS has drives over 5 years old without any issues at all.
So you can absolutly save more if you are willing to put in a bit of work for it, but the nice thing here is no extra work and warranty support.

By now I have saved enough that should a drive be bad buying a new one is still cheaper than buying direct drives.

In another deal thread with these I saw some comments about reliability issues with these newer red units. Is that a concern? Are there any other brands worth looking at in this price range?

Which drive came in that one?

I have gotten reds and white labels.
The last batch was white label, and AFAIK it's identical to the red.

I should clarify the old old ones from many years ago were regular reds, anything I have gotten in the last few years are red pros (7200 rpm)

in my FreeNas setup I don't care if it's slower 5400rpm as they read in an array.

For my Unraid setup the 7200 is nice since disks are accessed individually.

I use them for Plex 4k material no problem and to backup my files or offload my local PC storage.
