Is this digital? will it only work on "disc" versions of the console? And
If digital, will it work on windows as well?

Game pass ultimate is not required, but to play any online multiplayer game that isn't free to play will require xbox game pass core. (sept 2023 it changed from xbox live to xbox game pass core)

Gamepass is not needed for local multiplayer (split screen or consoles in your home network), but if you are playing with people online (outside your home network) then I believe you need Gamepass. Your Windows machine will also need a copy of Minecraft if you are playing between the two.

Local online will work between PC and Xbox but not between Switch and Xbox/PC without Gamepass.

I started playing this game in 2009. It was a cool game, played for a few years. Then my nieces and nephews started talking about it, and it blew my mind that they knew about it.

Nearly 15 years later and it's one of the best games on the planet.
