I love my zwave devices. However, they are historically pricey. Also, I was an early adopter, and many of my devices are aging out. For example, my GE zwave light switches cannot even be re-paired to a new hub. My dozen old $40+ switches are dead now. According to my Amazon order history, looks like I've been buying zwave since 2016.
I'm still working through this as well, but Matter is a new industry solution and is arguably more open and futureproof. Where Z-wave and zigbee are mesh only. Matter is both IP (wifi) and mesh("Thread"). This means if you have a matter (wifi) device, it can operate with just about any smart hub you own now, or any in the future.
I'm not a fan of the wifi only proprietary solutions, and in contrast, Matter is an open wifi solution which means any future hub will be able to support it.
I'm currently using the smartthings hub and it already has Matter support, as it's wifi, and was implemented into my hub for me. The hub does not have the matter/Thread radio so that will keep me from using the Matter mesh network for now unless I replace the hub in the future.
As Matter is "pure LAN/open wifi", all matter devices I purchase are compatible with my smartthings hub or any hub I choose to use going forward.
From what I can see, for "reasons" matter/thread devices are possibly cheaper to manufacture, as I don't think I've ever found a zwave light switch for $13.
If you are looking to integrate with home assistant I would check up on these particular models. My other matter enabled tp-link switches don't work yet with the current home assistant integration.
Matter ushers in the end to the annoying guesswork in purchasing smart home devices. A unified connectivity standard among different ecosystems means a larger pool of available options for a seamless connected smart home.
Bought 4 a couple months back, one likes to disconnect from HomeKit constantly. No clue why, and nothing seems to work to get it back until it decides it'll work. Other than that they've been fine

Thanks! If I may ask, why did you give up on zwave?

What are the benefits of Matter compared to good old Kasa app/Alexa integration?
Matter is open and direct on LAN. No third party app and registration required as Matter works completely on your private network without any cloud app required. This gets you nice things like privacy, support when the internet goes out, etc.
I use kasa and smartthings pretty heavily, but would like to reduce the "kasa/cloud" reliance.
So I gotta replace all the 30+ kasa switches that work perfectly fine to make ti matter compatible. I hate how good companies force us to switch products.
I still remmeber the Tcp connect fiasco. Was very good cloud based early smart bulbs then they sold off the company and killed their cloud thereby making the smart tcp connected bulbs worthless in the sense they weren't smart anymore.
Samsung also sold off the smart things hub to some third party.
Why fix what not broken.
/rant over.
There's no pressure on you to make any changes. Matter is the solution we always needed which is a fully open, no proprietary or 'cloud' hub required.
You can choose to swap out for Matter at your own pace.

Totally agree - I have a house full of TP-Link Kasa dimmers, on/offs, 3 ways, and 3 way dimmers, not to mention smart plugs, and won't be switching them out (no pun intended) any time soon. In the meantime I'll use Alexa routines and Home Assistant to control them.
At some point the Matter devices will drop in price; that being said, if I was just getting in to smart switches, I'd go with these Tapo Matter compliant switches - the prices aren't too bad if someone wants to start out with a coupe and add over time, with the benefit of lower pricing as sales volume goes up.
I assume existing Kasa switches either can't or won't be firmware upgraded to be Matter compiant?
EDIT: I do have a couple Matter compliant Tapo smart plugs - the Tapo app was recently updated to recognize my Kasa devices, so they are all in the Tapo app, although I really don't use the app for anything other than "away" mode when out of town.

That's the neat thing... Because matter is wifi, in theory any existing smart device could add matter support with a device update. Will any manufacture do this? I don't know.
Thread support though is mesh, which is a new antenna, so no new mesh without a new device.

For example, just the most basic z-wave light switch is $40 here https://www.amazon.com/Enbrighten...10
