So $149 unlocked 3rd Gen iPhone se after 2 months? Or do I need to keep for 2 months service to have unlocked?

You just need to have 1 month of active service and switch it off. It should unlock automatically after 60 days.

will it unlock if never activated though? Can I use it on another carrier, guessing not until its unlocked.

Is there a cheaper verizon plan besides the $30 one that I can keep it on for 1 month and then wait 60 days and then use elsewhere?

It's $149 since you removed the plan. you can still go ahead and pay $149, use a cheaper $10 tracfone plan for a month and it will unlock after 60 days.
