That's not unusual for a 17" gaming laptop
Many times it's crossed my mind to get a well-equipped laptop and use it on my desk, plugged into a larger display and still have it portable for occasional needs. There are plenty of options for external drives to handle expansion. Place it on a cooling base for help with thermals, use your favorite kb/mouse AND, if someone is considering that option say versus a proprietary Dell desktop (which has limited upgradeability), then hey......
Good post - thought provoker.

Yes but the question I have is... Realistically how often am I going to be gaming on the laptop when it is not docked and I'm in transit or something? Personally for me the answer is very, very little. So then why buy a laptop? It's a hot box with more chance of failure and throttled performance. I can't justify it.
I really just need a desktop. But I don't see any good deals on them. I feel like these same specs on a desktop should amount to at least 25% lower price. A desktop with these specs should cost like 1500 given it doesn't have a screen and they didn't have to do engineering magic to fit all this power into a 17" frame? Not sure if I'm being unreasonable with my price expectation
Yes definitely not
Is it worth the hassle of returning to get the MSI for the upgraded RAM? I also like the better webcam with privacy shutter, but that's not a huge deal.
I honestly prefer the larger screen (using as a desktop replacement essentially), and having a physical location to go to if there are problems, but I'm a bit torn.
I'll probably keep since I got $50 cash back (not enough to cover RAM upgrade, but helps with it), but I'm fairly uneducated on this stuff and wondered if there might be a consideration I'm missing.

Thanks, I didn't even notice that.
The ASUS also has a 2nd expansion M.2 ssd slot
