Looks like this this set only uses gravity to get the cars down the track. There's probably a motor in the lift then it just falls down the track from there.

I got the expressway last time around for $25. Takes two D batteries. Motorized elevator takes car on each side up, gravity does the rest. Elevator automatically goes back down to catch cars again, so theoretically you could turn on and cars will run continuously until they crash or batteries die.

The expressway looks improved/updated. The last one I had, the elevator was car-specific on lifting cars. The width and height had to be right to ride the elevator. The weight of the car had to be right to make the circuit.
