Good price but the version that can do digital is not much more and far more versatile. I have three of these non digital and haven't picked one up in a couple years.

Thanks for your input. Would've also been helpful if you link the product you're talking about.

Use radioreference.com to check your area to see which analog signals you can get. Now that the pandemic is over and things are back to semi-normal, the big analog to digital conversions are starting again. Several of my local entities, like the sheriff's department and most of the fire departments, dont even use their analog frequencies any more.

I know nothing about radios or walkie talkie, I wonder if I can take these camping for kids to play with and talk while they are sleeping in different tents.

Keep in mind that a ham radio license is required if you intend to transmit on these radios. No license is required if you only plan to listen.

Out of the box, these radios will NOT transmit on FRS/GMRS frequencies, but they can be "unlocked" to transmit on those frequencies. However , it is illegal to transmit on FRS/GMRS frequencies with a ham radio, even if you have a ham and/or GMRS license.

No, CB radios operate at a much lower frequency that is beyond the range of these radios.

Thank you Examiner44, thought it might be useful on road trips to listen for speed traps.

These are not good for that use. These are ham radios so they require a license if you plan to talk on them. Also, they are probably too complicated for kids to operate.

FRS radios would work best for your situation. No license is required and they are simple to operate.

I have the uv5. My only complaint. The lcd is hard to see and very small for old man eyes. Background colors don't help either.
