If you are doing stranded wire you have to make sure you tighten the screw on the left down all the way. Where these shine is romex and stripping off the outer sheath easily. It can do super thin gauge wire as well if you back the screw out.

The good old days of big systems with Alpine, Pioneer, Rockford Fosgate, Phoenix Gold, Kicker etc etc.My cheap strippers helped build many systems that competed in IASCA.

I have 3 automatic wire strippers including these. They are my least favorite and are the most finicky. I find that they do not work well on hard insulation like Romex and often scrape the jacket without breaking it. They also don't work well on highly flexible insulation due to the way they tear off the jacket. Sometimes, they will tear off just one side of the jacket and not the other. The best automatic wire strippers I have are the Klein Katapults. Those work every time and give you a cleaner cut. These do, however, work well on small gauge wire if that is your use case.

I have a set of these and lately, they've been a bit flakey. I've had trouble stripping solid core copper with a hard outer shell as well as smaller gauge wire. No rhyme or reason to it. They were quite capable when I first bought them. Thankfully, I have several different kinds of wire strippers at my disposal.

I've had these. Maybe not the first thing a professional electrician would reach for, but when you find their sweet spot, (and for me, it was taking the jacketing off Cat 5 cable while on the top of an 18' ladder, or crouched behind a home theater system running wire for 12 different speakers,) I was happy as hell to have them with me.
