No, RAM is built in to chip so whatever it has can't be changed. Same thing with internal storage, though you can get external drives to add more storage.

Perfect deal for Christmas for the high school/college kids needing something to get them through school and then some.

Also for anybody needing a good travel computer for editing. Cheaper than an Air.

They won't discount the 16GB version huh

As a former apple hater, I can't say enough good things about the M series chips. It comes at a good time too as windows and android has ramped up the spyware to previously unseen levels. I'd spend some more to prevent my OS from collecting everything

Can anyone recommend a PC equivalent with roughly same specs or same price and better specs?
Nope - there is none

is there a way to add memory?
No of course not. It's an apple.

People think their old Mac's are worth so much, when you can get a new one for this price. I never see M1's at a price that makes sense to buy vs just getting on sale brand new.
Well, once upon a time used apple gear sis retain significant value... Not so much now.

It's still true. Best in the market resale value for computers and phones.

The approach Apple chose for their own CPUs was to make a single System on a Chip (SoC) that includes the CPU/GPU/Memory in a single package. There are a lot of benefits to this approach such as extremely high memory bandwidth, unified memory (100% is shareable between CPU/GPU unlike Intel/AMD), etc. A notable downside is the memory is fixed at the time of purchase. That is a tradeoff, much like any tradeoff in life, that comes with both pros and cons.

That's not an example of "Apple out to rip you off". If you want to take issue with Apple, call them out not for making amazing chips with justified tradeoffs, but for the pricing difference on the memory and storage tiers. THAT is totally fair criticism imo.

That you know of. You'd be naïve to think Apple isn't collecting data. At the least, MacOS continues to be bogged down by all the integration with iOS; they keep porting over more and more apps and weighing it down.

The ram price difference is a bit steep but it's not just a random surcharge for a stick of memory at least.

My issue is that they insist on selling most units as 8GB. The extra ram may be the difference of 5+ years before becoming ewaste.

I never said they don't collect data on you... There's evidence of apple data collection via packet capture that people have noticed. It's much less than windows. That's the reality of today, if you want something that collects no data, you need to not be connected to anything at all.

Same, darn, have been shopping MiniPCs for our daughter but this would have worked well since she already has an iPad and it was in the same price ballpark. Oh well, likely to be other deals.

Fwiw I just switched to this mini from a 27" 5k. it's tremendously faster than my i7. Also got a Samsung m8 32" smart monitor from a pawn shop for $250 otd so into this mini for $750 and has more ports than the new iMac for half the price.

People complain about apple but these computers so far have lasted me 5+ years. I have another iMac 2013 with 256gb ssd from apple and that thing is still running, try that with a pc
