Woot staff commented and said it's Apple refurb, wish it would specify that in the description though so we can feel confident.

This is an amazing deal. 16GB of RAM should be good for a long time. At this price just go pick up an aftermarket warranty.

This has enough RAM that you can mess with the smaller LLMs with LM Studio.

Make sure to choose the 1tb variant, which raises the price to $1399(same as earlier deal, except this is 16 inch screen). That is if you think you need more than 512gb

do you think it makes sense? I feel like a half a TB should be enough for most use but I'm debating

I would choose 1Tb, as external SSDs are slower. One can easily run out of 512gb considering size of pictures and videos you might edit/store, but if you have don't have such use cases, 512 should suffice in which case the new M3 deal for $1799 might be a better option IMO, although that's quite a difference in price.
