Welding. It gets the clamp up and out of your way.

Also clamping into recesses. Just imagine needing to clamp flat stock onto the back of some C channel, whether you're welding them together or drilling and/or tapping threads and need them to stay lined up.

These generally work best in pairs or more since the points of contact are so small. And they have a small learning curve how to get them really tight. I usually get them fairly tight while closed onto the objects I'm trying to clamp, then open them, tighten 1/4 or so turn, then close them again. Another method is using a hex/Allen key or bit (on an impact driver even) to tighten them while closed.

Think of it being useful anywhere you could or would use a small normal C-clamp but don't need that much force and might need to put it on and take it off more quickly or one handed.

It looks useful, but I have no idea in what situation this can be used. I love IRWIN tools, they are good in quality!

I had a garage door motor break on me a few years ago. I used one of these to manually lock it.

Great for clamping metal down. Also useful on wood if you use sacrificial pieces sandwiched in.

But why use this instead of one with swivel pad?

I find the ones with the swivel pads SO MUCH MORE USEFUL! The hard round ends like this clamp always want to slip so I pretty much never use them.

If you do most things at your house DIY, you'll find a use, if you don't already have a bunch of clamps, and as others have said, it's what you need in certain situations where regular clamps don't work.

Great for compressing calipers if you're doing your own brakes!
