You might be talking about "Thrawn", which was a standalone until it received some sequels, making it "book 1". This is Heir to the Empire, the book that actually introduced Thrawn (as well as Mara Jade) and the canon sequel to the original trilogy before the prequel trilogy was even made. Word of warning if you read this it may make you dislike the Disney sequel trilogy even more. opinions vary…
Can't believe they just tossed the entire extended universe as "legends". I read dozens of these books when I was a kid and they were so much better than "somehow... Palatine returned".
The series is great for any SW fans. Not a bad price, but the Slickest deal for these books is using your library card and using Libby for either the ebook or audiobook. I recommend the audiobook as it is quite immersive in its presentation.

This book along with the other two in the series are the BEST Star Wars outside of the original trilogy and it's not even close IMO. Thrawn is amazing. Unfortunately, Disney's is laughably bad compared to Timothy Zahn's. Read this trilogy and then watch/rewatch Ashoka. Disney's Thrawn will come across as a bumbling idiot that constantly fails yet always claims he meant for the outcome to happen. It's laughably bad compared to book Thrawn.

Thrawn reminds me of James Spader in the Blacklist. Basically a mastermind who is in charge at all times except for the exceptionally rare and critical lapse.

That's just a naming thing. EU was always "extended", which meant it wasn't truly canon. The movies were always free to disregard any of the thousands of scattered EU stories, Disney just explicitly gave it a name. I don't understand the anger over that. If you want to be mad that Rise of Skywalker sucked, I'm on your team. If you want to like some of the EU stories, I also agree. But getting mad that Disney said they weren't canon when they were already not canon is silly.

Disney has ruined Star Wars for me, was a super fan and looked forward to anything Star Wars. I'm cooked now, even free I don't watch now. Sad.

The only good in Disney's SW imho is Rebels and maybe season 1 of Mando. Everything else is Hutt feces in comparison to the best of the "Legends" media like the original Thrawn trilogy.

Disney really failed us by skipping over Mara Jade. If they really wanted a badass female character, they should have brought her in

Now I need to reread some of my favorites I read in high school in the 90s

I just finished listening to this book on Audible and am nearly finished with book 2, Dark Force Rising. These books are awesome!

The old rule was "EU is canon unless contradicted by the movies". Lucas reserved the right to ignore it, but he had a team whose job was to keep it all consistent. The new rule is "we're rebooting the EU, so all old stuff is now noncanon unless included in the movies". New stuff can reimport old elements into the new timeline, but they might be reworked in the process, like Thrawn and his career timeline.

That's because bob iger, Kathleen Kennedy, and jj Abrams completely butchered the latest trilogy. I don't understand why they couldn't base the script on this trilogy instead of just winging it.
