All gimmick, at least the metal ones wont scrape the inside of your glass - But you'd want ice to dilute your drink a little bit if you're serving whiskey and bourbon neat. A better gift for a whiskey lover is one of those large ice cube / shphere trays, bonus if they make the clear ones.

On behalf of whiskey drinkers everywhere. Please stop buying these. 1. They do not hold cold temperatures more then a minute after putting in a glass. This is not ice people. they have horrible heat capacity compared to ice.
2. Many people have broken their favorite glassware dropping these into their whiskey.
3. Many have also chipped a tooth having these slide down the glass into their teeth.
4. No self respecting whiskey, Scotch, or Bourbon drinker would be caught dead using a whiskey stone. This is the kind of thing your mother in law buys you because she heard you like whiskey on the rocks. don't believe me, google "Why not whiskey stones"

Just don't. If you want a gift for a whiskey lover, buy them a nice bottle of Whiskey! Perhaps a nice store pick from a Liquor Store!
