For what it's worth, I buy my own oil (full synthetic) and filter when I see the oil deals here on Slickdeals. A good Mobil 1 filter at Walmart, or similar deal on eBay and you can make a very economical oil change. I have a local shop that will change my oil for $15 if I provide the oil and filter, no wait or appointment , just pull in and they do it. It would be worth asking around, or even asking a non-franchised quick change place if they will do it if you provide the oil and filter.

...And yet people balk at the price when we do the same for $40 at my shop (with a WIX filter!). Why? Because they all instantly compare prices to the Wal-Mart s-, I mean, pit crew price of $25 for an oil that is absolutely bottom-tier and a sad excuse they call a filter.

Moral of the story? At least try to call a few local shops to see if you can get a better price on your next oil change. Most are probably high, but there are still a few righteous shops out there hanging on for dear life watching while people grossly overpay for the most simple services elsewhere.

Slightly off topic, but IMO with labor prices the way they are now I think it's absolutely still worth changing your own oil if you are able to. I can change the oil in either of my cars with full synthetic (Supertech or Kirkland usually) and an OEM filter for under $25. Takes about 15 minutes if I'm working slowly. Ramps and a catch can will set you back about $60, then you're set for life.

Not an option for everyone to be sure, but it's maintenance almost anyone can handle if they have a place to work and the desire to save some money.

I've been thinking about trying to do my own. Can you recommend (or tell me what to avoid) ramps or other supplies that make the job easier? Where do you get the supplies?
Amazon. Ramps make it easier but are not always required. Trucks and non-sporty sedans sit high enough. I also invested $15 into an oil drain valve, it's like a little tap and screws into the oil drain. Fast, no mess, and I don't need to fight a plug.

I use this drain pan.
https://shop.advanceautoparts.com...9017658-p? Pro tip, the spout cap WILL break in short order, but the white caps you commonly find on washer fluid jugs fit perfectly on the threads. Just keep those caps from now on, and you'll never have a problem.
Hope this helps.
Nice!! thanks for that tip.Applause I used the same container for the last decade and the cap has been missing. Resorted to a rubber glove to cover the spout. Now i know where to find a replacement. Thanks!!

my biggest trouble using the ramps is it keeps sliding back, after i jam it in the tires, it's because i got a rear wheel drive. So I needed to place some rubber mats on top of the ramps, the tires grip the mat first then on the ramps and drive up.

I just did my own oil for the first time. Bought Costco brand synthetic oil when it was on sale and bought Mobil 1 filter from amazon. I def felt the difference, the car is running alot smoother.
You will love yourself for doing this as you stack up the savings over the years. I have 4 cars in my family "fleet" and I save about $700 a year by changing my own oil

I wouldn't go here to get your oil change. Go to a dealer or small business or do it yourself if you can. Valvoline tightens the oil filter so tight that I needed to use the jaws of life to take off my gf oil filter. After removing it, the oil filter resembled a crushed soda can.

According to "my tiktok research" Valvoline employees are required to use a tool that over tightens the oil filter. You can see other mechanics trying their hardest to remove the oil filter even the last resort of sticking a screwdriver through it so you have extra leverage.

Other mechanics and DIY oil changers say this is bad because it might strip the threads where the oil filter goes.
this! try to do the oil change yourself if possible! if not, take to dealership or reputable independent shop. you do pay a bit more at the dealer, but it's 99.9% guaranteed to be a safer option that the quick lube places since they don't just hire any high school kid lol. reputable indy shops might take some research and shopping around to find but worth the effort if one wants to avoid the dealership.

Woow, that is interesting. I didn't Valvoline does that. I have always changed oil at home since 2007. I have bad experiences using oil change places other than dealers. For new oil filter, I apply some clean oil to the filter gasket and handtie it. It never leaks oil even at high rpm and I am also able to get it loose using my hand only when it is time to change oil.

Why would they do this and why would it be required?

Nope, since 2018....and, on the 4th (or 5th) one, it's free. ...
