Many of those animals, especially the farm dogs live much better lives for an animal than my dogs that live in a house most of the time. I've seen the farm life of the dogs and it seemed like paradise for an energetic pup.

I thought this seemed like a pretty good price. We were looking for one without a bottom like this a couple years ago to use as a "catio" but got the bright idea Think to built it ourselves to save money. Of course, when all was said and done I could have bought 2 of these for what the DIY thing ended up costing. Head Bang

Outside of working dogs, do people still keep their pups outside? It was common place growing up but it seems a little unethical now.
Unfortunately lots of people do. There was a story in Eastern NC that a family left their dog tied up in the backyard during the last hurricane. Luckily a police officer was driving by and saved it from drowning, because the water was filling up in their yard, and he had nowhere to go. The family had left town.

People routinely keep Pyrenees in fields for goats & sheep. Many people have hunting dogs, foxes or pig, who are penned out. Guard dogs are still in use between fences in prisons and military installations - some places in high crime areas also utilize guard dogs.

But to your point, generally, pets are kept indoors now.

Scum.

Edited to say we must have at least one animal hater here.

My guys were pets, but I would let them out to chase off a coyote or fox that had eyes on the coop... farm life can be rough though. I've had to stich up an angry donkey after a fight with pit bulls, I imagine stitching up a working dog wouldn't be that much more pleasant.

It's definitely different. I watched as little dogs herded cattle and it was fun to see! The little dogs also lived inside on this particular farm but had a doggy door so had open rights to explore as much as they liked.

What is wrong with people? May they always have an itch they can't reach. May all their lottery tickets be losers and may all their shoes be a size too small. Scumbags.

Out here they leave their dogs outside year round, and by outside I mean run free unleased throughout the neighborhood and they don't get them their shots. I hate it, my dogs have a fenced yard and their shots but are mostly indoor dogs but I really don't like having free roaming dogs around that could bring disease around my pets! None have been attacky as that would be a whole othe problem but I would take care of that issue with a quickness if there was a direct threat to my family or my pets.
