Very little kids are probably better off with a spincaster or just a panfish rod (basically a long stick with line). Once kids can tie their shoes, they can probably learn to use a spinning rod like in this deal. Another advantage of the Daiwa Samurai is that it is fiberglass which is more forgiving of bad technique than a carbon/graphite rod.

My recommendation for kids as a first spinning rod is the Ugly Stik Dock Runner. $17 at Walmart and great for adults too.

Yes! We used it in our last fishing trip and it's perfect weight/size for kids. A very good starter rod.

It's a good all round setup for inshore saltwater. You can catch a variety of species with that setup. You can even drop down to 3500 for a lighter setup. I use something similar to catch sea trout, redfish, snook, snappers etc.
