I don't recommend google hardware anymore. They can't be trusted. I had the older model which won't let me update settings anymore. It still works, but you cannot do anything about it: https://support.google.com/google...r/11257354
Incorrect. You can setup extra routers as points.
Source: I owned 3 routers. When wirelessly meshed the 2 Ethernet points are active so you can wire in a device if needed. I eventually used the 3 in an Ethernet backhaul.
Looks like amazon has it for $65. This is the wifi 5, not the wifi 6 version.

I bought this and promptly returned it. Had issues with Intel wifi chips in regards to channel selection and forced me to always use 2.4ghz

Does this require cloud account? To access router settings. Im coming from Asus router and looking for cheap router to handle my IoTs on a separate private network with custom subnet ip range + few customized settings. Will this router allow me to edit such settings? I already tried Motorola ones and doesn't suit my needs.

These are not so hot. You can find a bunch on eBay or Facebook Marketplace for a lot cheaper since people are dumping them in masses. If you believe in Google and their mesh.. go for it.

Agree. I was a google fan before. Google do this type home hardware in very different logic compared to Android system. They don't want you control too much details to enhance better user experience for non-tech users. Kind of mimic Apple's philosophy.

But google doesn't run as a big team like Apple did. So google drop service quickly if cost is oversize their small team.
Realistically, good user experience need a lot of works and maintain costs. Google do not capatible for that due to internal culture.

Just avoid those if you need more controls by yourself. ( They are solid but not a great service for more tech person )

Newer gimmick from Google to grab and harvest more of your personal information. Stay away from it if you can.
Wireshark reveals a tons of privacy issues while using Google devices, if someone knows what I am talking about.

Thats similar to my Infra, All smart devices, thermostats, FireTVs, Roombas, Smart switches etc on one network, All RPI's on the other, All mobile devices on a different one - Much easier to manage and to learn who the F**k does what .

The only two (three?) onhub routers were made by third parties (asus and TPLink IIRC) and they were made a LONG time ago. I think dropping support for those routers is acceptable. Heck you say yourself it still functions you just cant change settings, Time to upgrade for more coverage and speed. I don't even know if they could have continued software updates to keep up with security. A bit different than if you installed a smart door lock that stops working one day
Functional hardware/routers shouldn't just be bricked, it's a needless waste and expense. not providing support is fine, but rendering it useless (unable to change settings is just that) is another thing.

fortunately, you can install open source software on the OnHub, which is a responsibility Google itself should have done prior to abandoning it, instead of leaving it to enthusiasts.

Honestly anybody still shilling for Google hardware at this point probably have some kinds of agenda. My perfectly fine Onhub has been a paper weight since Jan. And this is not the first time. Search for Google Graveyard to see how many products they killed at this point.

Everything to them is just an experiment. They don't care about end users at all.
There are no end users, only 'products' for them to sell.

I have the original google wifi puck? If I set this up as my primary router, could I use the puck as my "add-on point" to set up a mesh system?

Fyi these have fallen into obsolescence... Mine started acted funny a few weeks ago and barely work now. Huge known issue in Google and Reddit forums that Google is refusing to give answers on. Stay away just my 0.02
Same. I set up a new AppleTV over black Friday and now everytime I use it, it completely crashes my network. I'm using the original Google Wifi router (puck only).

Routers are NOT points. You cannot interchange them with this version. The OG you could do that but not on these. You need one router and then multiple points to attach to them.
This is false, you can absolutely use this version of the router as an access point. In fact, you can even have ethernet backhaul while in AP mode with these routers.

Source: I have a pair of these in my home. One is set up as an AP with ethernet backhaul.
