I have 2 of these, well maybe the prior version as ours dont look exactly the same.
Unlike most 6V ride ons, BOTH rear wheels on mine are geared (usually only 1 is). That said, the track's radius is tight enough that there's a fair amount of wear because the speeds of the wheels never match. I wound up putting some electrical tape on the outside surface of the wheel to give them a bit of a grip as the weight of my 2 year olds' wasn't enough to get the wheels to grip at the time.
Thomas sounds run on a separate battery (AA or similar I forget which). Access to the main battery is a PITA and requires a screwdriver, so charging it is more difficult than it needs to be. I searched high and low for more track pieces that would allow for something other than a circle and it appears that at one point those pieces were made, although for a different PW ride on, however that had been discontinued.
I've been trying to sell ours for a couple years just because those kids are now going on 6 and the trains are just taking up space.
