If you're in CA - you're allowed to submit what's called a trial by declaration to fight your ticket. Essentially, you submit your version of events to the judge, who notifies the officer to do the same - and then the judge reviews both declarations from you and the officer and makes a final decision.

This works in getting your ticket dismissed more often if you follow a couple of steps. First, make sure you make your traffic stops is not a memorable one for the officer - keys on dash, sunglasses/hat off, hands on wheel, windows down, "good morning/afternoon/night officer... yes officer, no officer," etc... do not fight him/her on anything and just sign for the ticket and go about your day. 2 weeks before your court date - extend your ticket/push court date out (you can initially push it 3 months). 2 weeks before your new court date, CALL the courthouse and make up an excuse why you can't make it for your court date (surprise work trip, family member sick, etc...) The court clerk will ask you what's the next best date for you - try to push it out another 3 months. Now you're 6 months out from your initial court date - start working on your trial by dec. and make sure the court receives it 2 weeks before your court date. Now this extends the process by about another month, as now the judge will ask the officer to respond and will give him/her 30 days to do so. However, so much time has now passed that the cop won't care about sticking it to you/taking the time out of his/her busy day to write a response - you were not a dick, you were not memorable, and it's whatever. So most likely the judge will dismiss your ticket. If the judge does not dismiss and rules in favor of the officer if they did reply - then you have an option to ask for a trial de novo - an in person trial - and you and the officer both have to go in. Hopefully in that case, so much time has now passed that the officer will most likely not show up, and if he does, then judge will rule in their favor and you can ask for a reduced fine/traffic school to reduce the severity of whatever consequence you may face. Lots of info on this online. I've gotten 8 of mine dismissed and 5 of my friends/family members' tickets here in LA county. Good luck!

A speeding ticket will run you $250-300 in fines and then your insurance will shoot up for 3 years too.

In the market for a radar detector. But can someone please educate me on why someone would get this versus something like a Cobra RAD 480i for $150?

Just bought the R7 on Amazon for $450 minus 6% for delayed delivery so net $423. My guess is sooner or later the R8 will pressure the R7's lower.

I don't know much about the Cobra. I know I played around with a bunch of cheap detectors and it has never served me well. The cop will randomly show up with barely any warning. I switched to escort 9500ix and also escort redline. Which were good radar detectors. Then I switch to uniden r3 and also r7. They're amazing. The r3 is great for my work car. It's was 300 dollars. It's amazing if you just want to be alerted. No arrows. The r7 is on my G80 M3 and I'm glad I have it. The R7 provides arrows and the range is even better. Been pondering on just going with R8 so I have arrows in both cars. It's really nice to know which direction they're coming from.

The Bluetooth was activated via a recent update. Highway Radar is the only app that currently works with it, I think jbv1 was working on integration. I don't think it works with Android auto yet, but was being worked on...
Highway radar is a great app, even if you don't use the r8 with it. It's much more useful than Waze.

I actually only use my r8 when I'm on the open highway. The sheer volume of cars with blind spot monitoring trigger k band a lot. I have the filters all turned on, and I'm running the settings suggested on radar busters to quiet it down.

One of the coolest things is that it does work with photo radar, I had a couple of alerts driving somewhere I don't normally go the other day.

This is a great deal. I bought a refurbished unit on eBay a few months ago for $540 with a two year extended warranty.

Mine is hardwired in, with a remote in my tray by the gear shifter. Honestly I use highway radar for all of the muting anyway, in hindsight I wouldn't do the remote mute button.

Highway radar can be used to program the detector. It shows you a map with heat zones of recent enforcement with a risk score, picks up aircraft, and shows their flight path. It's not uncommon to see state police helicopter, Cesna, etc. There's an integration you can leverage to pull Waze data, make submissions, etc.

You definitely want to tune the radar detector to your location. The more you have "on" the slower the processing.

If we're talking iOS, R8 Companion is available as well. I use it and it really helps to quiet BSM radars.

Any idea how this (or even the 360 max) is compared to escort 9500ix? I think last I read, 2-3 years back, the 9500ix still did quite well compared to the newer stuff.
...
I sold my 9500ix because it could not handle all the newer cars with lane change assist technology which uses K band. It would go off every time I'd approach some random Honda. At that point it became pretty much useless because if every 3rd car triggers an alert, you get numb to them and miss the important ones.

The R4 is quite fun as well.
I had an r3 that after years if being exposed to the south florida sun had the screen go bad, no shame in that uniden, its extreme here. I replaced it with an r4 for 299 but if anyone is looking ot save a few buxks and still get plenty of warning, r3 is great. Cool features as you ove up in price but the whole r line is awesome.

How does the R7/8 handle K-band warnings from lane change assist on other vehicles? I have a cheap Cobra that serves me well paired with Waze, but goes crazy anytime there's a Mazda or Audi on the highway.

TLDR: for United States

And military bases...
To add, laser jamming is much more costly but can be used (legally) in most places.
Quote talking about Cali laser jamming:
"When it comes to laser jammers, apart from California, they are banned in Colorado, Illinois, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Utah. Both devices are illegal for private and commercial cars in Virginia and Washington, DC."
