As a police officer, I love radar detectors because people that have them tend to drive within reason. That being said, almost no departments use handheld radars anymore, it's either moving radar that is almost always on but can be set to stationary mode or handheld infrared lasers, or lidar, such as the Pro Laser Iv. These units will give you warning for moving radar but they won't for lidar. The cone for the laser is 3 feet at 1500 feet, and it doesn't bounce around down the road like radar does. The return speed is less than a second and we aim it at your grill area, not your windshield. I may shoot a laser at you and it doesn't even register on your detector.
That being said, people with detectors tend to be safer drivers, definitely driving slightly above the speed limit but not below the speed limit which is statistically more dangerous to a large extent. This deal seems good and the brand is reliable.
Anyone who wants the R3 over the R4 is crazy. I own both and the R3 has way more false alerts than the R4. I love the more advanced warning of the R4 over the R3.

No this has a laser sensor but that is mainly a gimmick. Laser is very narrow so if you get hit the detector is probably not going to see it and even if it sees it it'll be too late for you to slow down as the cop will already have your speed.
With that being said it is very good for radar and you couple it with Waze you should be good with most threats since laser has to be stationary so hopefully someone saw the cop and reported them on Waze.
If there is a lot of laser use in your area then I would look into ALP. Which is a laser jammer, it actually doesn't let the cop get a reading. But it is expensive $1200+
You folks are completely wrong about the Laser detection. The ONLY time it won't work is if you are lone wolfing it. If there are other cars being hit by the laser you will catch the laser scatter and get a detection. Having said that, I think in the 4 years with the R3 I've been hit by laser twice, may three times tops on I5.

You appear to be honest but instead of busting fools for tailgating and reckless abandonment driving, you'd rather just pull somebody over and give them pain. Cite the ones that are causing danger on the road, not those trying to hustle a buck

The chance of catching laser deflection (or scatter) is very low. The laser sensor on a radar detector is the size of an led and normally it'll be mounted at the top of the windshield, the laser beam is being aimed low towards the license plate or headlights. Imagine a laser pointer being shot at the car in front of you and your detector catching it.
My upgrade offer from them is $489 plus shipping ($110 off retail).
That sucks bro you may be better of using V1g1 with JBV software. I think it's a huge thing thr JBV app, I have a v1 and r3 too and not sure if it's worth to get V2 or Uniden R3 on deal
Use Waze . It's free and laser or whatever, it doesn't matter. Usually accurate
Waze is not enough. Highway Radar with the additional crowd-sourced alerts plugin (wzsabre) is better but still not enough. They won't help you detect moving vehicles broadcasting radar.
Should run a detector alongside the software. Highway Radar even pairs with radar detectors. It is completely legal to identify publicly broadcast radar signals, and I'm not sure why people think it's a good idea to not be able to do so.

You are actually the one that is wrong. If you get a laser alert, and it is not a false alert, then you received a direct hit. Laser is an extremely narrow beam, even at a mile away. There is literally almost no dispersion.
The above said, having a good laser detector is still a benefit. If it picks up a hit from a trooper a mile away, it gives you time to slow down and hope he gets somebody driving faster than you before you pass him. Not only that, the alert might prevent you from driving even faster and getting an even bigger ticket - or getting arrested for reckless driving.
I have the R3 many years ago. these are more for placebo to make you aware when it beeps. Not really working because the ranges are not that long even they claimed "Long range" by the time it beeps the police car like 30ft in front of you. Just drive slow, follow the speed limits or 5 10 more than limits max then you should be fine.
AGAIN TO HAVE 1 TO BEEP WILL MAKE YOU FEEL "SAFER".
One thing the police officer on this board won't tell you: get one of those cheap laser diffuser license plate covers for your front plate. That's the flat highly reflective surface that returns a speed reading on the first try. Laser is tough to catch, but that gives your detector a prayer. Also use Waze, obviously.

I own and R3 an R7. The R3 won't update the firmware anymore and it does have a ton of false positives. R7 is top notch. I'm buying an R4 right now.

more like move out of the left lane.
