A flight to Osaka at this price??? Wow this is a slickdeal. Basically saves you a $120 bullet train ride to Osaka. A lot of people are unaware that the JR pass has doubled in prices making super hard to break even on the pass. This saves you some money and time.

You might say well there is a layover. I say that gives me time to eat all the cheap yummy foods at the 7/11 and airport.

EDIT: someone in the comments said they found a flight that goes from LAX to HND to NRT to ITM.
Make sure you check the flight before buying. This is not ideal.

Ideal would be LAX to HND to ITM
double in price JPY, yes.
but with the current exchange rate it is closer to ~$350 USD

what I never really liked about the JR Pass was that it limited you to the slower trains, so instead of sub-2 hours Osaka/Tokyo it was 2.5-3 hours and a more limited train schedule.

so instead of being able to get to Kyoto by 8AM from Tokyo you're stuck getting there a later point in the morning. can't do day trips as easily.

before when it was ~$250 USD the rail pass would be worth it if you were going to do at least 1 single Tokyo/Osaka RT on the bullet train AND you were going to take the Narita Express AND you were going to take mostly JR surface rail.

I used it once in 2017, and quickly realized it was not useful for getting around Tokyo, as a lot of places are either accessible only via Tokyo Metro/Toei Subway, or you have to constantly transfer between different lines.

the money "saved" was not worth the extra time getting around the stations, especially when some JR to subway exits are opposite of where the ticket offices are for you to exit from when you have the JR pass.

for those wondering: round trip between Tokyo and Osaka is JPY 14,000 one way, about $100 USD. that's if you book the ticket last minute at the station or online via Smart EX.

zero point using the rail pass unless you're trying to see all of Japan by train within a very short period of time.

Pretty amazing price. I'm locked into delta so I can't take advantage of this. Perfect if you're going to the Osaka area. The train to Tokyo is like what under $200 round trip so it's not too bad even if you want to go to Tokyo.

Also the JR pass is overrated as heck. I was able to get it and use it before the price increase and I had to go far and wide to get the value.

They have an airplane pass. It's not really a pass but suggested to take planes to these areas. Like it's 100 one way to Hokkaido. Normally a 10-12 hour train ride. It only takes an hour by plane.

It really comes down to your plans but overall, I would say it's pretty difficult to really make use of the JR pass pre price hike and definitely now post price hike.

New JR pass can ride nozomi train so that lift a lot of restrictions with the old pass. Still trying to figure if is worth it.

I found out this March that JR pass now uses train ticket. No more showing pass to staff

My friend is planning a month trip and he is squeezing every penny out of it. He's going to Tokyo to Osaka to Kyoto to Hiroshima to Tokyo to Hokkaido. In two weeks.

Good luck! 🥴😵 💫

Too good to be true. The cheap fares involve a transfer from Haneda to Narita in a short turnaround, which is a nightmare process in of itself considering how far Narita is from Haneda that is near downtown Tokyo.

Nice deal if you're heading to Kyoto or Himeji, but a little too early for Sakura. Personally JAL/AA has really gone downhill, much prefer Singapore followed by ANA/UA for the service and miles.
