The problem with OLED screens in general (with the exception of large OLED TVs) is that they adjust brightness by pulse width modulation (PWM). Basically, when you lower brightness via PWM, what's essentially happening is that the screen is rapidly switching between full brightness and turned-off state, instead of lowering brightness itself (hence the term 'flicker'). Even though our eyes perceive the screen as darker, it's simply being turned on and off at full brightness very quickly, which can fatigue your eyes if you are sensitive to it.

I thought I was not sensitive to PWM (for more than 10 years), but now my eyes are aging and I can't bear to look at PWM screens in darkness for more than 5 minutes. So your sensitivity may change as you become older, too. I agree that reading with a black background may not be as stressful to the eyes (because most of the screen is turned off with OLED screens that way), but the letters themselves will still flicker unless you are at full brightness.
The battery life is great on mine and it's super fast. No complaints...
I have actually used it for months and stand by my comments.

You should look up actual battery reviews for this specific device. Battery life is great. Generally SD 8 Gen 1 is not recommended but it runs great in this device. Probably because the radios aren't active. Performance is good too for this specific device.

I also chose this device to have the LCD since I have issues with PWM on OLED displays in dim lit rooms

I had both this and a Tab S8 Ultra, and I traded in the Tab S8 Ultra for a Tab S9 Ultra. But I kept this specifically because it has an LCD screen (no noticeable PWM and much, much easier on the eyes especially in the dark). As for performance, you likely won't notice the difference between this and the latest gen unless you are gaming.

Battery life...8gen 2 is significantly better.

I have this, it's alright. Battery life could be a little better and the 500 nits brightness is a little deceptive, under slight load (even just. note taking for 5 minutes) it does not allow you to have the brightness set to maximum of long at all, it is super glossy so this is a huge annoyance, native blue light filter is awful and unusable and was obviously not tuned for this LCD screen. If you don't have high expectations for the screen, you probably will like the tablet.

It does run fast and has no real issues with performance, just has some quirks that make it hard to love. Was hoping this was the first android device I wouldn't have to tinker with root/roms/adb/GOS/throttling/oneui to get it working properly but Samsung still isn't there yet imo.

Back on the weekend of November 18 2023 this was on Samsungs website at about $330. That was a purely purchase only price….no trade in required and no special discount code or group. It was listed under their Black Friday promotions. Problem was when you added product to your cart and tried to checkout the item was included at $499. I had multiple chats with CS as I kept trying to purchase. They were well aware of the issue and suggested it was being worked on and could be fixed at any time. I even explicitly asked if this was an erroneous price and I wasn't given a clear answer. They did suggest a workaround by buying at the $499 cart price and then contacting CS to price match their own website. But between this product already being somewhat dated as well as the issue of complicating rebates by processing customer service adjustments I decided to wait it out. And it does appear it was likely an erroneous offering as by Monday the price reverted to $499. For a company the size of Samsung their website is trash. The following week I decided to try the OnePlus Pad during their Black Friday promo. Too difficult to deal with Samsung especially with such premium priced products.

Lol someone had to vent I guess.

Yes Samsung's website is atrocious and so is their CS. Old news for most on here. It's about how much you value your time and/or how good are you at multi tasking while texting their CS lol.

I have the 8+ with the same chip and the battery life is great, I'm a very heavy tablet user and i still end the day with well over 30% left.

Might i suggest trying the device before crapping on it.
Also before you say oled is why my battery life isn't crap, majority of my use has the screen at least 50% white if not more
