90+% of the time cops are lazy and just leave their radar blasting. This is obviously location dependent as well, but most cops along the east coast in my experience don't use Instant-On. Even when they do, you will get an alert from the cars ahead of you that they hit.
Just wanted to chime in. I own this unit for years combined with Waze it's saved my @$$ countless times. By far best radar on the market. I'm sure the newer models are just as good if your willing to pay double the price for the additional features.
Great deal for a great detector.

You miss the arrows from the R7

You miss the Bluetooth and other new features from the R4

You get GPS which allows you to lock out known areas with stationary signs and such. Also you can do low speed muting where you won't get alerted driving under a certain speed (store parking lot and such)

I've got a dfr7, an r3 and an r7.....hands down its worth upgrading to a model that has the directional arrows.
If your budget doesn't allow, then this is an amazing detector, it also has a smaller footprint than the r7.

I've always been interested in these but have often heard that even the higher end models are as sophisticated as the radar equipment the police are using to detect speed. AKA, they will capture your speed before your detector will detect their radar!…obviously if it was that simple, then folks wouldn't buy these or would complain after the fact, but curious about those that have used one for a while and what their experience has been in that context?

Nothing so far. It's another Uniden half-baked offering.

There are 3rd party apps that let you control it more and adjust the settings beyond what Uniden has programmed. Vortex Radar just did a review of all the apps on YouTube for the current state of them

Same here, had it since it first came out (maybe 6-8 years ago?) Great distance and filtering. Can't recommend it enough.

Ooh didn't realize you could mute at low speeds. I always end up turning down the volume when I'm in parking lots. I call my r3 the Dollar General detector.

The unidens have really good range, what you are getting from any of them is early warning, radar bouncing off cars ahead or just coming up around a bend where an officer is concealed off the shoulder. So you get the warning, adjust, and then when they have line of sight and can get a real reading, you've slowed down.

Now Laser or Lidar is much more instant and focused, as the officer must aim the laser at a vehicle, usually a license plate or headlight to get a near instant reading - that's where Jammers come in, much more pricer, but the best way to combat laser. (you can jam laser in most places, you cannot jam radar and no commercial product does - federal offense with the FCC) that's where the comments about laser detection just being a notification you're getting a ticket. I have had my old 9500ix get some laser off a car ahead of me and he got pulled over, I was slowing down BUT I already knew they loved that spot so I wasnt gonna speed there anyways.

Radar has definitely saved me a couple times, I also just enjoy the added awareness of knowing there is a cop who is actively hunting for an opportunity to write a ticket.
