You miss the arrows from the R7
You miss the Bluetooth and other new features from the R4
You get GPS which allows you to lock out known areas with stationary signs and such. Also you can do low speed muting where you won't get alerted driving under a certain speed (store parking lot and such)

If your budget doesn't allow, then this is an amazing detector, it also has a smaller footprint than the r7.

Now Laser or Lidar is much more instant and focused, as the officer must aim the laser at a vehicle, usually a license plate or headlight to get a near instant reading - that's where Jammers come in, much more pricer, but the best way to combat laser. (you can jam laser in most places, you cannot jam radar and no commercial product does - federal offense with the FCC) that's where the comments about laser detection just being a notification you're getting a ticket. I have had my old 9500ix get some laser off a car ahead of me and he got pulled over, I was slowing down BUT I already knew they loved that spot so I wasnt gonna speed there anyways.
Radar has definitely saved me a couple times, I also just enjoy the added awareness of knowing there is a cop who is actively hunting for an opportunity to write a ticket.
