In my opinion, no. They look like they're gasless (flux core only) and 110/115/120V. The difference between those and a MIG (gas) 220/230/240V setup is *enormous*.

I've been using a Drico 150D MIG from Amazon since 2016. It's a 150A 220V unit. I've built front and rear bumpers, carts, done automotive sheet metal work, all kinds of stuff. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be available anymore, but it shows that a Chinese MIG can be reliable.

I had an AHP TIG, too. It died one month after the warranty expired. The cost of shipping it for repairs would be half the cost of a brand new one, plus the repairs, which I believe were only warranted for 30 days. I replaced it with an Andeli TIG off of Alibaba and it's been working great. It's not worth paying the markup to an American reseller of Chinese welders, in my opinion. Just go to the source, save money, and plan to buy another if it fails. Plus, it's been my experience that the Chinese sellers will at least attempt to troubleshoot problems, and they'll provide schematics. The American resellers just give extremely basic tests and then say you need to ship it back and pay for repair, and they omit schematics from the manual, probably to hide the fact that there are a handful of Chinese welder designs repackaged into countless brands.

Yes, times change. But, this is still the best hardware shop out there for folks like me. Can't complain.

Your welder depends on the welding requirement. My suggestion would be to take a local community college welding class and learn by doing. Then decide what your needs require and don't buy it from HF or YES, but that's just me.

My Dad was a Precision Welder and taught occasionally at a Local Community College… he also recommends " Learning how to Weld " before purchasing a Welder… so you'll know what you need/want. 😎

Have you seen how much community college classes are these days? It's the price of the welder or at least a solid portion of it. Easy stuff like MIG welding, a person can pick that up watching a couple of videos and practicing on scrap steel.

Used a YES YMW-211P welder all morning... Works great, don't know what you're going on about. For a home gamer, I'm not dropping $5k on a welder when this $750 one does a great job with more features for a fraction of the price. I can understand buying a cheap Hobart or Lincoln if you just want to run MIG on steel since they're reasonably priced, but f you want a spool gun for Al or to run TIG the price for a name brand machine is absurd.

This is a hobby that requires skill that's much more quickly learned under the guidance of a professional. To me, it's admirable when someone takes the time to learn a skill outside of their wheelhouse for no real reason other than to grow their knowledge base.

I've got so many courses and programs I'd love to join given the time. Hell, I considered taking a night job at like 1/3 my normal pay to learn CNC machining in the real world. My fiance told me I wasn't allowed to work 14 hours a day though 🙃

For real, the welding course at my local comm college was $900. It was great to get hands-on experience, but still, not cheap

FWIW, we started and spent most of our time with straight-up stick welding to learn a lot of the basics. After that, MIG basically felt like using a hot glue gun.

I have a Miller tig welder, it weighs somewhere around 4-500 pounds and will weld a battleship. The newer solid state welders with microcontrollers and programs have features that make it all so much easier, in a much smaller footprint. I'd get one of those, your kids will be happier for it.
