This is not the model listed in the lawsuits. The ones listed in the lawsuits are various Extreme and Extreme Pro models as well as the Pro-G40 and Western Digital My Passport. I don't know if this model also suffers from the same issue(s) and I am trying to figure out when it was introduced. I've gone ahead and ordered one given the extended holiday return period. I'll leave it unopened until I decide to keep it or there's a deal on a Samsung T7.

Fire sale on these since they have fatal flaws and drives fail right and left. Don't do it.

Is this the cheapest external ssd so far this year?

Hope there's another crucial 150ish 4tb mx500 before the year ends.

Were these the ones failing?
Nope, it was the more expensive version that has issues, this one works fine. I owned both.

Not the fastest but if you need temporary storage it's a great price. Just make sure you don't care about the data written on this device should the drive fail lol

Decided to take a chance. I backup whatever is on my desktop (photos, music, documents, etc.), so the odds of both this SSD and my desktop drives failing at the same time is pretty small. So for me, the risk is fairly low.

potential warnings are helpful
I bet WD and other SSD manufacturers have that warning buried somewhere in their warranty's now.

Is this the one that lost the data of many customers when it malfunctioned and then got them sued? Or was that another drive?

Does anyone happen to know if and when this failure issue (story link above) was fixed for the 2TB versions going forward?
if I buy one, I want to be 100% sure that my drive was manufactured after that date...

Going to check around and report back if I find anything meaningful.

EDIT Is this a different model than the one for which there is a firmware fix.

WD shows:
https://support-en.wd.com/app/fir...lookupform

Which products are impacted by this firmware issue?
The following products have been impacted by this issue.

• SanDisk Extreme Portable 4TB (SDSSDE61-4T00)

• SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable 4TB (SDSSDE81-4T00)

• SanDisk Extreme Pro 2TB (SDSSDE81-2T00)

• SanDisk Extreme Pro 1TB (SDSSDE81-1T00)

• WD My Passport 4TB (WDBAGF0040BGY)

(end quote)

Walmart does NOT mention "Extreme or "Extremel Pro" and shows: SanDisk 2TB Portable External SSD - up to 680MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2 - SDSSDE29-2T00-AW25

The model numbers between WD.com and walmart.com are different.

So, is this Walmart drive a) reliable and b) is the Walmart one even one of the drives impacted by this issue (for which there is a firmware fix at the link above)?
