By the way this seems to be the first mini with a much shorter battery life - barely lasts for a couple days if you set it to send waypoint updates every half hour or so. Not sure where they got the stock as most stores stopped selling these over a year ago. Make sure you bring a portable charger with you on a longer trip. The new one - mini 2 lasts well over a week without recharging depending on how often you set it to send the waypoints.

That is probably BS (Apple's marketing), still need to be in range of a cell tower .
Uh no, it's real - I did my research and I did see it popup once or twice in my phone - you get a special icon in the upper right corner but you have to be out of range from all cell towers for this to enable. I just can't remember if this was only for emergencies or regular texts but you can Google it

It is for emergency only. You can't do normal text over it.

And that's a huge peace of mind for a lot of people. Could probably save many lives if was available long ago. This feature alone makes an easy choice to switch to iPhone for the backcountry hikers
Also for the iPhone 14/15 , the satellite emergency service is free for now.. likely for 1-2 more years then a cost will be added in the near future from what I remember .. Apple has not announced when or how much these fees are..

Simple search could have avoided being wrong and getting all the thumbs down:
"Instead, Apple's satellite network will use the same bands used by most other satellite communication services, specifically the L-band and S-band frequencies. Apple confirmed this in this week's announcement, noting, "When an iPhone user makes an Emergency SOS via satellite request, the message is received by one of Globalstar's 24 satellites in low-earth orbit traveling at speeds of approximately 16,000 mph. The satellite then sends the message down to custom ground stations located at key points all over the world.""

I'm a backcountry hiker and I would never use a device that is actively sabotaging repairability and is spying on you 24/7/365.

Okay, don't use it then. I'm a backcountry hiker and I will use the device that may save my life if something goes wrong. And this spy thing is getting old, apple is not interested in your life, and you can turn off ad tracking. Tell me another mobile device that has better security than iphone and I will switch.

BTW, this is the original Mini, not the Mini 2, right?
