Because backup exists, and spinners are way more cost effective for that, also nand is going to spike in price making this even more true.

There nas drives are better than seagate from my experience. I think most laptop drives suffer from heat. I've pretty much had all brand laptop HDD die on me even with minimal usage. Enclosed spinning portable laptop drives must be avoided. You should be fine with this drive though, I actually just installed some 20tb ones about 6 months ago with no issues. Might get these to replace a few older drives that are pushing 7 years.. who am I kidding I'll run them till they die then replace them haha

These look to be the equivalent of the WD Red Plus (7200rpm) drives. 3 year warranty, 180TB/year workload, 1M MTBF, vibration resistant enough for up to 8 bays.

WD has 2 10TB Red Plus drives for $310 if you want the better brand / warranty replacement. WD will replace drives in advance. Toshiba will give you a "Gift card" equivalent of the product and have you order from their store.

I actually have pretty good luck with the 2.5" portable drives.
I currently have 2 WD Black 5TB Game drives and a 5TB WD Elements and a Seagate 5TB Drive and they have all work just fine for backup's and Movie / TV storage on my Media center PC. They don't really get hot at all being they sit atop the Case with fans blowing up through them. I also have a Toshiba 4TB that mostly sits on a shelf as a Music Backup drive.
They all just work.

Yeah that one has the body that looks like a heat sink for a good reason. Keep it fanned. I use 2.5 inch drives as well. I have 8 of them in an array, each group of 4 has it's own fan. But I still replace those more than any other about one a year with another always reporting smart issues. I just run them till they stop spinning. They aren't even large. 500gb. So they shouldn't be as dense but they still die faster. They will be replaced with ssd once I burn through my stack of 500gb ones.

Good to know. I don't really keep anything essential on these, their just for storing media of one type or another. I have some pulls from old laptops and PS4 that I use as bulk storage as well but those are just setting in a bin also. I get them out every now and then and shuffle stuff around just to keep them somewhat active.

I have a pair of N300 8TB working in NAS in RAID 1 configuration (data duplication) for the past 4 years 24/7. No issues.
