For $300 bucks it is a very good intermediate guitar.
For $100 difference, Gretch is 100 times the guitar. There's also resale value to consider.
How about for a complete noob? Wanting to learn guitar and for $300 I think i would bite

Most definitely. Even a pro player would dig this axe. I'm tempted but not a fan of the bright red color.

Take a look at these, if you're not ready to spend 3 bills.

No pedal needed, but an amp would be required to actually make noise, yes.

Pedals come later when you decide you actually like playing!

I own several of both brands and have problems with both Gretch guitars, none with the Fireflys, you're right about resale value, but for a new player the Firefly is a great place to start, and when was the last time you tried to sell a used guitar, look on Craigslist and nobody's interested in low end guitars.

As another commentor mentioned, you don't need a pedal but also don't over-invest in your amp either. A small, 10W amp is really all you need. https://www.amazon.com/Fender-Frontman-Electric-Guitar-Amplifier/dp/B001L8PIFW/ref=asc_df_B001L8PIFW... [amazon.com] This is a solid amp that will provide everything you need. The gain will give you plenty of distortion and the headphone jack is really nice if you live with others. You'll also need to invest in an electric guitar tuner. You don't want to skimp on these, as a tuned guitar is essential (especially when you're learning). You'll expect to spend $20-30 on a decent tuner.

Probably true on Craigslist, but can always take this to Guitar Centers all over the US and unload it with ease. Might not be at top dollar but it's instant.

I could be naive, but I've never seen a firefly there. They might totally rock but I'm a big fan of the name brand on guitars, for the sake of resale, reputation, ease of access to parts/upgrades.

Obviously just my opinion, but after 25 years of buying and selling guitars in and out of my collection, it's never steered me wrong.
