I got this reel a few weeks ago when it went for $49. Its a solid reel for freshwater and inshore fishing. Its still worth it at this price point.

Seems like this is 17 version, the 20 and 23 version are already on the market. probably the store is trying to clear inventory And create space for most uptodate version.

Will these work good for saltwater? I was thinking of buying a Penn fierce to pair with an Ugly Stick GX2, but this might work.

The 2500XDH model is a nice reel!!! Have one for about 3 years now and in for another at that price.
That model takes in more line per turn, which I really like when reeling in bigger largemouth.
This is for freshwater.

If you baby it and don't dunk or get sand or saltwater in or around it then it's fine. I have one that's in pieces now - the magseal is a gimmick (for what they claim it does) and I don't trust it. I'd much rather trust a properly sealed reel for that matter even if heavier in weight and or more expensive. You do get what you pay for here (and before anyone says it, yes I did rinse the reel with freshwater after each use) It should work fine with that rod too btw. Just try to match it according to specs. Occasional or last resort use, sure but don't plan on fishing it too hard around saltwater IMO

Interesting, thanks for the info! I was semi-worried about this problem with the water getting in since I had two mid-range Daiwa's that failed from only doing Saltwater Pier fishing so I will probably will go another route... The Spinfisher VI deals are crazy now, you can Pre-Order a Penn Spinfisher 3500 for only 80 bucks instead of 180 on Amazon, and the Spinfisher is fully sealed. I have some and they are pretty smooth, a no-brainer with the current price tag against any other reel in the Penn lineup.

Thank you for the info! I am not a big Daiwa person but probably will try a BG in the future since it is most recommended for saltwater in the budget... Also with the Ugly Stick GX2, a whole bunch of people use it on the OBX, NC because of its durability and cheap price point... I personally never had a problem using it off the pier as a bait catcher rigged with bottom fishing rigs and sabiki rigs. I also had the original cheapo ugly stick reel doing work for more than 5 years in the harsh saltwater conditions, until this year when it got all corroded on the outside. Probably would be a whole different situation though if I was using it for the surf...

If you aren't using braid on the GX2 then you might be fine. If you use braid (even if 8+ strand, coated for smoothness, etc.), the GX2 guides will corrode in saltwater, it's just a matter of time. I have close to a dozen Pure Fishing (Ugly Stik, Shakespeare, Penn) rods with the one-piece stainless guides and over half of them have corroded guides even with rinsing the rods off after every trip.

The GX2 is absurdly durable and used to be much more affordable but even bargain bin Walmart rods with aluminum oxide guides will hold up to saltwater better in the long run. Just straight up avoid anything from Pure Fishing with the one-piece stainless guides if you're primarily fishing salt, especially if you use braid.

I have the 2500 one. Love it. Light and smooth drag. I use it for surf fishing. Lots of salt and sand and so far it held up well, at least comparable to Penn Spinfisher. Clearly better than unsealed ones. Really tempted to buy another..

BG is not sealed. If sand gets in, then it's gone. Their customer service is good though. I sent it back for warranty repair and they sent me a new one.
This one can take a lot more salt and sand.

Depends on what you're trying to catch. If you want some surf perch or halibut, then you'll probably want a 4000. I use a GX2 with a different 4000 series spinning reel for saltwater. I catch halibut, sandbass and rays with it. I'll admit that I've never used this specific reel, but the price did catch my eye 😅.

If you're worried about salt, then just be sure your reel can handle some salt. And of course don't dunk your reel in salt or sand. And never soak your reel!

EDIT: I misread your comment. I use a Penn Fierce 4000 with my GX2. A shimmano sienna 4000 is good too. A bit cheaper and the drag is old fashioned and easier to adjust. I have it on my wife's elite ugly stick
