Yeah this is a pretty important detail.
For those who aren't familiar with the ecosystem, the bulbs come in 3 main varieties:
white- white light, dimmable
ambiance- spectrum of yellow to white light (think candlelight vs old-school office fluorescent bulbs)
color- the rgb lights that can go all sorts of colors
Imo the white bulbs have fairly limited utility and if your main goal is automation (on/off) as well as dimming, you're probably better off with standard bulbs and a smart switch.
Ambiance I'd use at a minimum since it can mimic natural light (bright white during day, softer yellow in evening)- I have my living room fitted with a color lamp and kitchen fitted with the ambiance bulbs.
The bulbs themselves are also the main cost in Hue setups. The bridge itself is worth ~$20-30 used on ebay/facebook marketplace. The buttons are also surprisingly expensive, so if you plan to get into hue ecosystem, needed both a bridge and the button, you basically get some cheap bulbs as an addition (but again imo not worth it)
Ok deal if you're just starting with Hue, probably not worth it if you're expanding. Like others have said, the "white" bulbs are no different than any other light bulb with a fixed color temperature - you can accomplish the same with a lower long term cost using a smart plug + dimmer.
The button is a programmable switch that can do different actions depending on time of day and current state. "If off during the day, turn on. If on, turn off. At night, turn on a night light, etc" Much less complicated for kids and guests who just want to turn the lights off and don't want to mess with voice controls or a proper remote.
Anyways... if you don't need the hub and don't want to bother selling it, this is like $8 of savings for 3 bulbs @ $16/each and $30 for the button. If you want to eBay it for $20 and are into the plain white bulbs, better deal.

The new version of hue doesn't require a bridge. You can also look at Kasa bulbs as an alternative for bulbs, plugs, switches, etc… great tie in with Alexa, and Google Home. Philip's still charges too much for these.
