NATIONAL BESTSELLER • "How did our democracy go wrong? This extraordinary document ... is Applebaum's answer." —Timothy Snyder, author of On Tyranny

The Pulitzer Prize–winning historian explains, with electrifying clarity, why elites in democracies around the world are turning toward nationalism and authoritarianism.

From the United States and Britain to continental Europe and beyond, liberal democracy is under siege, while authoritarianism is on the rise. In Twilight of Democracy, Anne Applebaum, an award-winning historian of Soviet atrocities who was one of the first American journalists to raise an alarm about antidemocratic trends in the West, explains the lure of nationalism and autocracy. In this captivating essay, she contends that political systems with radically simple beliefs are inherently appealing, especially when they benefit the loyal to the exclusion of everyone else. Elegantly written and urgently argued, Twilight of Democracy is a brilliant dissection of a world-shaking shift and a stirring glimpse of the road back to democratic values.

Eligible for 10 Reader Rewards points (ISBN: 9780385545815):

It's weird how seeing partisan ideologues trash a book on a deals forum can make you want to buy it and read it. Same thing happened with a deal on a Jordon Peterson book. In for 1. 🤔

You are of course aware that applebum is the epitome of right wing, fascist nut-bag. Thought so. Do you even know what the word fascist means?
I don't wish to engage with the ridiculous political nonsense espoused by several people in this thread, so I am limiting my participation in this discussion about the author herself. So here goes:

How on Earth did you arrive at the conclusion that Applebaum is a fascist? Glossing over the application of the "nut-bag" epithet to a pretty even-keeled and moderate intellectual, I can think of few people whose have proven more dedicated to liberal democracy–the practical antithesis of fascism–and anti-authoritarian reforms than she. Irrespective of your opinions on whether she is right or wrong in her reasoning, or even her conclusions, she is objectively not a fascist.

So, seriously, say what?

the people throwing around the word "fascist" here have no clue what it means

they heard it used online and now think it's a vague bad word like "socialist" or "woke"—just another catchall term for undesirable

i don't think they're big readers lol

I'm guessing TheYosh is in the UK where their definition of right-wing is the opposite of ours here in the USA. Here she is considered a Left Winger.

*Screenshot as this will likely be deleted.

Madeline Albright was also given lots of prizes for advancing "democracy." She looked into the camera in the Leslie Stahl interview and said, "Yes, the killing of 500,000 Iraqi CHILDREN was worth it to achieve American goals." Look it up on YT, sir.

Albright, Applebaum are arch neocons. They hide behind platitudes about liberal democracy to advance corporate interests via the war machine at OUR expense -- yours and mine, unless you're in the top 1% net worth -- the expense of the labor class, the working man of America. The entire tax base goes to fund never-ending war because of people like her.

My great-grandad fought the fascists, wounded three times. Two of my other relatives were dragged off by them never to be seen again. One of them was a little boy. Save your reading lessons, lads. In any case, you're reading the wrong books.

I apply Mussolini's textbook definition: they advance a corporatocracy that controls the government to the detriment of the general population. Very simple and clear.

I feel only pity for you guys. Maybe your eyes will snap open one day, but I doubt it.

I get the joke, but considering Putin is flooding our social media zone with anti-facts...

Applebaum used to write for The Economist, which is conservative. Which is right-of-center in the UK and right of center everywhere else too.

Quote from ThePeoplesElbow :
How about the people calling others "illiterate" actually figure out what the concept of American exceptionalism is. Maybe? Well?

This is your reply to the above person from a few months ago - August . (You are a Pretender at best.)

(YOUR POST);

"OK, I'll bite.

First, I'll tell ya a secret. Nobody cares about what the Americans believe about their own definition or understanding of their favored status as the indispensable nation. The Mongols and Romans likewise committed geocide and ran their economies largely off slavery, so please, apply whatever definition of exceptional you want to yourself, mate. Nobody cares.

What the rest of the world outside the west does care about is the military boot on their throat, petro-dollar coercion, the assassination of their leaders, the backing of death squads, the buying of corrupts officials, one-sided trade deals, the litany of unilateral withdrawals from treaties, the 800 military bases circumventing the globe, the bio-labs in their countries, and the typically false-flag induced non-stop wars infused with atrocities like naplam, depleted uranium, carpet bombing, incendiary bombing, torture, and indiscriminate murder of civilians leaving ruined husks of nations when the Yank steals the gold reserves and shuffles off to the next victim -- shall I go on?

But nobody said America sucks. It's given the world outstanding porn, pop culture, fast food, pharmaceuticals, and weapons. And who doesn't love the obnoxious, loud, overweight American tourist, eh?

So listen, I got some video cards to check out, but I'll be waiting with baited breath for your explanation of why American exceptionalism matters. And skip the sophomoric freedom and democracy crap please."

Which one won't ban me if I say I think the most obvious and logical answer is that the virus escaped from a lab? Which one won't ban me if I say I think the laptop and all its contents are genuine, and the 50+ government authorities who said it wasn't were lying for purely political reasons on the eve of a political debate, which should constitute election interference?

Elon's platform:X is the only one that will NOT ban you for the above.
Zuckerberg's Meta-Insta-FB will ban you as soon as our FBI tells them to, as always!
Reddit will also ban you asap, they too are controlled by our Government. Wave (as was Dorsey's Twitter 1.0 where the head lawyer of the FBI, James Baker went to work to oversee all people's posts on Twitter to ban immediately Hunter's laptop story, Jan 6th et al!)
