thought about getting one but ended up giving my a73 and a7R4 to my niece and nephew. I'll just walk away.......
..
I think these are the reasons:
- Nikon Z8 which is a direct competitor and attractive due to better specs in certain areas (will list some out).
- Waveform Monitoring
Essentially if you are video shooter, it's a killer hybrid camera. If you are a sports or wildlife photographer, it will do great as well.- Complaints about rolling shutter on a7R V
- Introduction of global shutter on the a9 III which will eventually make its way into all their cameras like the dedicated AI chip on the a7R V
- Rumors that Sony is working on a 3 layer Foveon sensor that would equate to better dynamic range, noise and color accuracy
- Introduction and continual push towards lighter cameras with the a7CR. Complicates their lineup but great to have options.
- Inflation causing consumer spending to tighten and sales slowing.
When you look at these factors, the a7R V starts to feel dated. But that's pretty much how it goes in technology. Still one hell of a deal at this price and probably fine for the majority of us who are hobbyist or professionals. Especially when you consider a decade ago the Canon 5D Mark II was sufficient to get the job done.
I suspect in a decade, none of these things will matter because all cameras from all manufacturers will have the technology and be on parity. Just look at the competition and how they are touting AI AF algorithms after Sony did it. We are just early to the party and have to absorb the cost of development as new features get introduced.

Sony 8K 24p/25p video
Nikon $100 higher MSRP, but Nikon $3699 sale price still $200 higher than the current Sony sale price.
Plus there are a bunch of things, viewfinder resolution, etc. that are much better on the Sony.
EDIT: Plus, which one of these would you rather carry around?
Nikon's Z6-Z9 are great cameras. Very briefly shot with the Z6 II. Part of the equation comes down to what lens mount you want to invest in. I switched over to Sony from Canon and I don't regret my decision. At the end of the day, just take photos, make videos, create art, and don't get wrapped up in gear elitism.

just curious. the a7iii is $1,298 currently. what is the price with EDU discount? below $1k?
Bought an A7IV for my partner as a gift for $1799 and the new 70-200 f4 macro for $1440.
All taxes and shipping paid. Amazing deal on this equipment, cheaper than used market. Put the order in last night, should be here tomorrow
