$2700 is a steal for this camera! It is a little surprising that the discount is so steep, but Adorama is legit as they come, so if this camera makes sense for you and your work, don't hesitate.

$3898 is tough to spend in this economy. Sony dropped the ball in the pricing.

Even though you need an educator email to quality for this promotion, it took me a while to figure out why Sony was heavily discounting these cameras. Even the non-EDU MSRP got reduced. Thanks for everyone who chimed in.

I think these are the reasons:
- Nikon Z8 which is a direct competitor and attractive due to better specs in certain areas (will list some out).
  • All electronic shutter with no moving parts making the mechanical shutter obsolete and future concerns of needing to replace it which can cost several hundred dollars
  • 20 fps shooting vs. a7R V 10 fps which is great for wildlife, and sports.
  • 4K/120p vs a7R V 4K/60
  • 10-bit ProRes
  • Waveform Monitoring
Essentially if you are video shooter, it's a killer hybrid camera. If you are a sports or wildlife photographer, it will do great as well.

- Complaints about rolling shutter on a7R V

- Introduction of global shutter on the a9 III which will eventually make its way into all their cameras like the dedicated AI chip on the a7R V

- Rumors that Sony is working on a 3 layer Foveon sensor that would equate to better dynamic range, noise and color accuracy

- Introduction and continual push towards lighter cameras with the a7CR. Complicates their lineup but great to have options.

- Inflation causing consumer spending to tighten and sales slowing.

When you look at these factors, the a7R V starts to feel dated. But that's pretty much how it goes in technology. Still one hell of a deal at this price and probably fine for the majority of us who are hobbyist or professionals. Especially when you consider a decade ago the Canon 5D Mark II was sufficient to get the job done.

I suspect in a decade, none of these things will matter because all cameras from all manufacturers will have the technology and be on parity. Just look at the competition and how they are touting AI AF algorithms after Sony did it. We are just early to the party and have to absorb the cost of development as new features get introduced.

Nikon 45.7MP, Sony 61MP

Sony 8K 24p/25p video

Nikon $100 higher MSRP, but Nikon $3699 sale price still $200 higher than the current Sony sale price.

Plus there are a bunch of things, viewfinder resolution, etc. that are much better on the Sony.

EDIT: Plus, which one of these would you rather carry around?

I'd love to buy this. No EDU account and I need a new lens before I can purchase a 2nd body.

Nikon's Z6-Z9 are great cameras. Very briefly shot with the Z6 II. Part of the equation comes down to what lens mount you want to invest in. I switched over to Sony from Canon and I don't regret my decision. At the end of the day, just take photos, make videos, create art, and don't get wrapped up in gear elitism.

Agreed, just use the equipment that you bought. When Sony went mirrorless, I switched over from my Nikon D7000. Fortunately, I didn't have that many Nikon lenses, so it was a good time to jump.

All good points. I'm not advocating for one or the other. Simply trying to reason Sonys aggressive price cuts after a year of release.

Sony announced the A7RV on October 26, 2022 and is discounting the camera $400 from MSRP. Nikon announced the Z8 on May 10, 2023 and is discounting the camera $300 from MSRP. I would say that Nikon is being more reactionary than Sony.

You forgot the fully articulated back screen and identical card slots vs Nikon's weird infatuation with providing slots of different card formats.

If you're a pro and using a cell phone, you're not actually a pro.

Ended up buying the A7RV for $2718 with edu discount and payboo card to pay taxes, so that's full price out the door. Excellent deal and great upgrade for me.

Bought an A7IV for my partner as a gift for $1799 and the new 70-200 f4 macro for $1440.

All taxes and shipping paid. Amazing deal on this equipment, cheaper than used market. Put the order in last night, should be here tomorrow

Did you have to get b&h customer service to price match or did edu price bring it down to $2718?

EDU pricing starts at $2,718 with no adjustment needed. If you bought at a higher price and within their return policy window they will refund you the difference.
