The models aren't grotesque or anything -- they're just typical people. It only appears awkward because they had the models try to emulate the same expressions done by professional models which as amateurs they don't achieve. The marketing director or whoever should've had them do something natural instead of trying to pose. Or maybe that was plan A, but the models couldn't repeat the look well enough to have standardized photos for all the different hats, and the "got stopped on the way to the bathroom by an annoying coworker who wants to tell me a 'funny' story" look was easier.
The "different" photos for each hat are just photoshops. They are the same photo, superimposed hat.
